Wrong setting in "PDF (for print)" Export preset

There is a wrong setting in "PDF (for print)" Export preset:

"Include bleed" is disabled.

It should be enabled.

Its absolutely crucial that any documents that are going to be printed contain a bleed area, otherwise it would be impossible to cut them to correct size without either leaving white edges, or cutting them down to a wrong, smaller size.

Save your own custom preset.

  1. Check the bleed option
  2. Click on the "hamburger" menu to the right next to Advanced
  3. Select Create Preset
  4. Give it whatever name you want

You can go back the that same menu later to rename or delete it.

Sure, but this is irrelevant, as the topic is about the error in the default template.

People sending files without bleed to print houses is a big issue, and its not fun to see a default setting responsible for this here in Affinity.
When people see this template, they assume the file would be good to print if they select it. It won't be.

Files with no bleed are not suitable for print.

No bug for me. PDF (press ready)-preset is aimed at sending the file to print houses. PDF (print) sounds to me like printing to home printers. Creating a preset of personal taste is no rocket science IMO and done in a few seconds. ;)

I just wanted to add something to @Blake_S :

I work in print house. We add bleed ourselves. I want my PDF to be exactly as I want them to be. That's why I created preset. There is no definition of PDF for printing standard, as various printers and operators have different workflows. Some machines need different color contours to be cut, others you can set your own color etc. In your case you need some settings, but don't say it's some kind of standard as it's not. I'm a living proof of it :)

We work with flags. They are sewed at the sides, but different application, flag types or designation need different bleed for the sewing. I know each type from my head, but clients don't. For me, it doesn't matter if he adds 0.5cm or 1cm if I need 2.5cm I always have to open and adjust. Sometimes flags are hot-cut, and than 10x20cm is printed 10x20 without bleed. Sentence : " Files with no bleed are not suitable for print. " is just wrong and not true whatsoever.

Then I should have specified "as long as you're not working with flags"?

Lets just say that files without bleed are unsuitable for print for vast majority of printed materials that are printed on paper/cardstock.
Flyers/leaflets/business cards/brochures/books/etc.

If the file doesn't contain bleed its always a problem, which results in either having to add it ourselves (content mirroring/pixel replication/scaling via preflight profile can work, but not always), cut into a lesser size, say "f*** it, the client won't care" and cut it into the same size with possible white edges left, or tell the client to send the correct file with bleed.

yes I know that because I sometimes send files to other companies and they are angry because of no bleed. however I know for a fact that this shouldn't be a problem as even printing software ie. RIP software has a bleed option builtin, and it can be added via shortcut or click of a button like here:

Where it can be decided if it should mirror edge to bleed, add color or extend edge. This is to make life easier, both clients and printer operators. Truth be told - many of them are too lazy to know option exists, as it's easier to make clients prepair perfect files, and just ignore clients that don't provide properly (as per each print shop requirements)... ;)

Not all software has this option.

Impose in Fiery Command Workstation doesn't have it, still. Your only option is to scale the entire document.

Xerox FreeFlow Core didn't have this option until fairly recently, although you could add it via Acrobat preflight profile yourself. But as I said, this doesn't always work. Sometimes white line gaps are left between content and bleed area.

And of course if you just have a solid fill then adding a bleed is easy.
When its part of some photo(s) that should have been extended to bleed area, then the problems start, especially when its something that will produce some monstrosity when mirrored.

As mentioned by @joe_l, I think that one is for home printing, and generally that uses cut sheets without bleed. PDF (Press-Ready) is for sending out to a print shop.

You'll also note that PDF (For Print) gives you an RGB document, which is most appropriate for most home printers. And PDF (Press-Ready) gives you CMYK, which print shops use.

  • 3 months later...

I've worked with print houses for 25 years and I also find the templates naming a bit confusing.
I mean, I know the "press" one is the right one, and I even created my own preset with some tweaks I needed for my usual providers, but still find the naming of the other one confusing.

If it was renamed to PDF (for home/office printing) it would probably clearer for everyone. It's a silly adjustment that might make a lot of people live's a bit easier.
