GarryP Posted January 8, 2023 Posted January 8, 2023 The controls in the drop-down are no different to those shown in the Context Toolbar when it is longer, so what is “missing” from the drop-down? Quote
laurent32 Posted January 8, 2023 Author Posted January 8, 2023 A : what is that white bar, we feel something is missing even if in fact nothing is missing. B : we have to guess what are those mm ? I think we could have the word "Gouttière:" in French. For B, I guess we could also have the word "Gouttière:" in the "large view". For the 3 little icons, I would prefer to have them horizontally as in the "large view". loukash 1 Quote MacBook Pro 16 pouces (3456 × 2234), 2021 / Apple M1 Pro / 16 Go / macOS Ventura Version 13.4.1 (22F82) + 31,5 pouces (2560 × 1440) + 27 pouces (1080 × 1920) + iPad (8th generation) / iPadOS 17.2 + Apple Pencil + … Macmini6,2 Quad-Core Intel Core i7 16 Go / macOS Catalina version 10.15.7 (19H2026) MacBookAir6,2 Intel Core i5 double cœur 4 Go / macOS Big Sur version 11.7.7 (20G1345) Licence Universelle Affinity V2 updated to 2.3.0
GarryP Posted January 8, 2023 Posted January 8, 2023 For A, I think it is a problem with the UI not showing the Columns spinner control properly. Good catch – something which needs fixing. For B, I don’t know about French, but I think the field should be large enough to show the whole value+UOM in full for the language being used. Again, good catch. For the three icons, I don’t think there will be a way to organise them ‘nicely’ which everyone will like, especially considering that the number of icons in the drop-down will differ depending on screen size, selected layer, and which Context Toolbar is active. Displaying them all vertically is probably a ‘please most of the people most of the time’ type of decision. Quote

For the 3 little icons, I would prefer to have them horizontally as in the "large view". I think what you're asking for is a vertical layout for the Context Bar that is designed separately from the horizontal layout but Serif has simply provided an overflow for controls that won't fit on a smaller screen. They are laid out identically but stacked vertically and cannot be grouped horizontally within the vertical column. The number of controls that overflow depend on the screen width and as there are many possible screen widths it would be rather difficult to come up with a logical design. For example, the Columns and Gutter controls are visually grouped in the Context Bar but if there isn't enough space for Gutter it will overflow by itself because it's a separate control. A. As Garry, said, the white line is the spinner (arrows) control which is definitely a bug. It initially works fine but if you select and deselect a text frame the spinner will get lost. Making the window wider so that the control is visible in the Context Bar and then narrower again temporarily fixes it because this problem only occurs when the control is in the overflow popup. I think this is the first time this bug has been reported. B. Putting a label on the Gutter control would mean the label would show up with the control in the Context Bar itself which would take up a lot more space. C. The three controls that follow (note that Frame Text Ruler will disappear when a text frame is not selected as shown in the light mode screenshot above) can't be shown horizontally. All overflow controls are shown in a single column. If you scale your window to the minimum width these are the overflow controls I see for the Text tool (left) and Move tool for a text frame (right). The ones that appear to be grouped together are actually single controls. The only one with a label is Columns because that is the only control in the Context Bar for text with a label, presumably because Serif couldn't find a simpler way to convey the control's meaning without a label. laurent32 Posted January 8, 2023 Author Posted January 8, 2023 I think we all agree… I'd just really insert "Gutter:" or "Gouttière:" or other equivalent in other languages in place of the red dot… Actually, It is not obvious that 8,5 mm is for a gutter and gutters are important… Yes, that tool bar will be a little longer but not much I think… Quote MacBook Pro 16 pouces (3456 × 2234), 2021 / Apple M1 Pro / 16 Go / macOS Ventura Version 13.4.1 (22F82) + 31,5 pouces (2560 × 1440) + 27 pouces (1080 × 1920) + iPad (8th generation) / iPadOS 17.2 + Apple Pencil + … Macmini6,2 Quad-Core Intel Core i7 16 Go / macOS Catalina version 10.15.7 (19H2026) MacBookAir6,2 Intel Core i5 double cœur 4 Go / macOS Big Sur version 11.7.7 (20G1345) Licence Universelle Affinity V2 updated to 2.3.0

I'd lose two more controls if Gutter had a label. loukash 1 Quote Download a free PDF manual for Affinity Publisher 2.6 Download a quick reference chart for Affinity's Special Characters Affinity 2.6 for macOS Sequoia 15.3, MacBook Pro (M4 Pro) and iPad Air (M2)
