CMD-F to search a specifically named object in the layers panel

Recommended Posts

Sometimes the list of object can be astronomical !

image.jpeg.985af53e201800e694fc8ebef17781ca.jpeg

If I named well the object I wish I could do a CMD-F to access one directly without wasting time to find it visually…

Thanks.

Since you already know its name:

  1. create a temporary object of any kind, a blank layer, group, whatever
  2. give it the same name you're looking for
  3. Select > Select Same > Name

MacBookAir 15": MacOS Ventura > Affinity v1, v2, v2 beta // MacBookPro 15" mid-2012: MacOS El Capitan > Affinity v1 / MacOS Catalina > Affinity v1, v2, v2 beta // iPad 8th: iPadOS 16 > Affinity v2

This sort of thing has been requested before.
Try searching the forums for find layer name and see how many threads you can find.

Thanks @GarryP but telling me to better search the forum is not the answer I was waiting for…

The only answers I would expect from Affinity team or any member that has the answer Affinity already gave are :

1. Nice idea, we will look at it one day…

2. The idea is already in development or in update procedure…

3. We have had a discussion on it, and no we won't work on it…

With clear answers everybody can fallow his route.

The Affinity forum is great and I'm sure Affinity is following it closely, seeing "live" what it's happy users are expecting…

Success is already here for Affinity, but I'm sure they are pointing at excellence !!

Yes, a search field like in the Swatches panel would be nice.

Affinity forum is also great because most of its users follow the rules of the forum and do not create duplicate posts, which are difficult to maintain and confusing for other users with a similar problem/wish, because then there is a lack of context for already solved/answered questions and discussions.

If you follow the forum carefully, Serif does not respond to feature requests as a matter of principle. So, with a high probability, you will never get the answers you expect.

As far as I can tell from your example, you basically don't name the layers/objects, so the requested function to search by name doesn't make much sense in your case. You could, however, use the color marking of the layer and select by tag color.

Thanks @Pšenda i can see that you like to give lessons but i’m not a child anymore!

I think a forum should be a friendly place where people can freely have nice discussions.

When looking for specific answers, people sometimes don’t have time to read hundreds of posts and/or take days to read tutorials that aren’t always easy to understand (even more so when they aren’t written in the reader’s native language).

Sometimes the answers are just one word away and discussions are great for that.

Manuals are good but forums are the fastest way to progress.

I’m sure that Affinity prefers it to be a dynamic forum, and not just a list of old posts that can rapidly get out of date because the apps get updated and upgraded.

I’m also sure they’ve got a pretty good AI system to follow it up closely and guide their R&D.

Some of you, active members, tell us newbies to better search and read, but we’re not in the forum for that, the forum isn’t like a manual and we’re not googling things, again we expect some simple help to progress quickly and be able to, one day, answer questions ourselves.

We get started by asking questions and end up answering questions, just like you!

Now i can understand you’re getting tired of answering the same questions over and over again, but then don’t do it, nobody forces you i guess?

Maybe it’s time for you to retire and rest for a bit?

Probabilities are probabilities… I already got a post from the Affinity Team.

You generally will not see those answers for posts in the Feedback section. Mostly they are read by Serif, but only commented on by users.

I learned by checking out earlier posts after using the Forum's built in search. I didn't want to waste people's time asking questions that had already been asked and answered. I still do a search, several searches, here before asking a question. This is even though I am sure my question has not been asked. I just don't want to waste people's time.

If you aren't going to read, why should I answer your question.

Come on Bruce, please read CAREFULLY what i wrote (the GLOBAL post) and understand my point of view.

If I’m waisting your precious time, don’t bother to answer me.

Please let’s stay focus on the topic’s subject… that was "CMD-F"…

It is not just our own time we are wasting.

Having multiple threads on the same topic splits the conversation on the topic across multiple places.  This leads to discussions being all over the place and people trying to find ideas (such as developers looking into what people want implemented) need to go through a tangled mess to see what was requested.  If there is one thread on a topic and a developer looking for clues on what people want find it they can more easily scan through the whole thing.  If there are 20 threads on the same basic subject and a developer is looking for information, particularly since most of what those threads contain is likely to be duplicated, it would waste far more of the developer's time to read them all and try to detangle the details contained inside, and they could be using that time to develop the feature.

Thus sensible ideas that might have otherwise made it into the product are far more likely to get lost in the noise when there are many threads on the same subject, or when people keep endlessly duplicating the same information and requests because they fail to take note of what was already said.

Someone is simply not interested in the problems and needs of others, or does not understand the difference between "Question" forum and "Feedback and Suggestion" forum.

As I was also advised, maybe you should go for a well-deserved rest 🙂
