I think the background removal tool should be extended to be able to remove more complex backgrounds. It works ok for simple color gradients, but as soon as the background becomes more complex, not much can be done. More sample points just create weird gradients.

At the moment I use GraXpert instead. The program creates a whole grid of points (which can also be moved manually) and then the background is calculated / subtracted using various interpolation methods. If this workflow were possible directly in Affinity Photo, there would be no need to export the image in between.
