vikingtone Posted January 5, 2023 Posted January 5, 2023 Hi. There seems to have been a number of reports of missing fonts - a problem sometimes attributed to Windows 10. But it's not a Windows specific issue - my installed fonts have never completely been available on my Mac. A lot of the time it seems the main family is available but some styles missing. Other times the entire family is missing. I have searched and there doesn't seem (as far as I can find) a definitive answer to why the whole installed font folder is not available in Designer. It's frustrating as I've moved completely away from Adobe, but need to be able to edit files I created in Illustrator, so must have access to all my fonts. If there is a working solution to this very important issue I'd be very grateful to hear about it, thanks Quote
walt.farrell Posted January 5, 2023 Posted January 5, 2023 We would probably need details of exactly which fonts are missing in order to provide much assistance. vikingtone Posted January 5, 2023 Author Posted January 5, 2023 Hi, thanks for your input. Personally, I don't believe it's anything to do with specific fonts. I have ttf fonts and otf fonts, I got rid of all T1 fonts a long time ago. I have a mac, so fonts can be in /Library/Fonts (Cooper Black, for example, an otf font, is in this folder, but not in the Designer font menu.) Fonts can also be in /Users/xxxxxxxx/Library/Fonts. Fonts on my system are only otf or ttf, they can be inside folders within each of those 2 'Fonts' folders or can be as individual files. Fonts show up in the Designer fonts menu, even if they are inside folders in each of the 'Fonts' folders, and they show up even if ttf or otf. But then, with exactly the same characteristics, they may not appear. I cannot see a pattern. I guess I could go through the whole of the Designer fonts menu and list the missing ones, and list the missing styles (for example I own Tekton Pro, and less than half of the family styles appear in the Designer fonts menu ( ?? ) ) but as I have 500 or so fonts installed it may take a while. The bottom line though, is that this has been a problem since day 1 of owning Affinity Designer, so I was naive enough to think it had been investigated and a root cause uncovered. thanks again Quote
thomaso Posted January 5, 2023 Posted January 5, 2023 • Possibly it helps to reset the font cache of both your macOS and the Affinity apps. – Affinity: Preferences > Miscellaneous > Reset Fonts – macOS: boot in Safe Boot mode > restart (directly) • Check if so called "Document-support fonts" are affected for your version of macOS: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT213266https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT212587 Quote macOS 10.14.6 | MacBookPro Retina 15" | Eizo 27" | Affinity V1

vikingtone Posted January 5, 2023 Author Posted January 5, 2023 Thank you laurent32 and thomaso. Strange occurances - I reset fonts as suggested and cleared font cache there seemed to be no benefit. I checked again inside the 2 system font folders and all looked perfectly as one would expect - but I decided 'what the heck' and uninstalled a bunch of fonts I rarely use, and reinstalled Tekton and Cooper Black as they are current faves. They now appear properly - I have Cooper, and all styles in Tekton appear, whereas before I had 12 from 18 styles - I now see them all. I don't comprehend this, as I have had this problem from the beginning and thought I had reinstalled fonts. But - I am now happy things seem to be OK, and I will probably reinstall all my fonts. I don't use any font management apps or methodology - I am old school, messing with macs fro SE30 in 1989 - old dog. thanks again to anyone who offered help it really is appreciated. cheers t Quote

vikingtone Posted January 6, 2023 Author Posted January 6, 2023 It bugs me that I stripped my SE30 in the early 2000's and have the mother board on my wall. I realised a decade later I really should have kept it going. Doh! Quote

Those are : athelas courier iowan old style marion super clarendon Interesting. The issue *seems* to be that, at least for me, new macOS (not sure which version) has somehow broken all 5 of the .ttc fonts that appear in HD/Library/Fonts (listed below), so Font Book doesn't show them and and they also show as missing in Affinity suite documents. Athelas Iowan Old Style Marion Seravek Superclarendon .ttc fonts that appear in HD/System/Library/Fonts appear to still be working for the most part, but I do see that "Courier" is also missing from Font Book as you said (and there may be others — I didn't check them all). Apparently for Athelas, Apple has intentionally deactivated the font except for use in existing documents that already contain it. And that may apply to the others. All of those are now Apple "Document-support fonts":https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT213266#document Quote These fonts are available only to documents that already use the font, or to apps that request the font by name. Some are older fonts that were included with earlier versions of macOS or Apple apps. The problem was caused by Apple, and should be fixed by Apple, and Affinity has stated that they do not intend to re-program to support it. Quote
