Creating an HDR image with one photo

Recommended Posts

I have a problem which I've recently been experiencing that hasn't happened previously.  I want to create an HDR from a single image. I always start with a raw file then develop it (and change the settings to 32bit). When I click on the Tone Map persona the preview panel appears blank and does nothing to the photo. This didn't used to happen to me when using V1 (I'm now on V2).

Also in V2 if I try to tone map in the photo persona it forces me to add a blank pixel layer otherwise it can't perform the operation. Maybe this is why the preview panel is blank as it's tone mapping from a blank layer ? I don't know. I just can't get it to tone map the background layer on its own.

The only way I can tone map /HDR a photo is to load a jpg file. Any suggestions why I am unable to create an HDR in the photo persona (from a raw file)?

I apologize I don't know the specific reason why you must use JPGs in Tone Mapping, but it's what they designed.

For more info see this HDR from One Exposure

EDIT: Replaced video, with the correct one.

Are you Developing to a RAW layer or to a Pixel layer (as you would have done in V1)?

I think @walt.farrell has the right idea about why this isn't working for the OP, because if on the Context Toolbar of AP V2 I set the Output: of developing a RAW file to a Pixel Layer then the Tone Mapping Persona works just like it does in V1. If the Output: is set to RAW Layer (Embedded) or RAW Layer (Linked) then if I try to open the Tone Mapping Persona for that layer, I get the expected "Please select an RGB layer..." error message.

Have you considered what @walt.farrell suggested about how you are developing the file? Are you outputting to a Pixel layer like in V1 or to a RAW layer?

Ahaaaa - thank you @R C-R I think you've hit the nail on the head. I'd completely forgotten about the output format. I've got it set to Raw Layer (Embedded). I get the exact same error message you mention.

I hadn't even thought the output was the problem. I'll  change it and give it a go and let you know. Thank you so much. I've been scratching my head for ages on this one!! Thank you 👍
