Brushes extension

Recommended Posts

This question is really just for info's sake. Why can't we have a vector brush extension and a raster brush extension? I don't think its a big deal for them both to have .afbrush but it would make it clear in a folder of brushes which ones go with designer (vector brushes) and which ones are strictly raster.

Why? Because that's not what they implemented.

And, by the way,

  • all .afbrush files work with Designer. It's the vector ones that don't work with Photo.
  • for V2, with all three applications sharing content, it's less important. With appropriate Preferences, it doesn't matter which application you install them into; they'll be available in any of the relevant Affinity applications.

I understand it's an innocent question. But a good answer to many "why" questions, in my experience, is "just because".

The designers didn't see a need to distinguish the files, so they used the same file-type. Thus, "because". In hindsight, might they have done it differently? Sure.

But I'm also serious that it doesn't matter as much now that the content is designed to be shared.

The only real issue before was when you installed vector brushes into Photo. Then they were hard to remove. Now, if you have both Photo and Designer, it doesn't matter which of them you install the brushes into. Unless, of course, you don't want to share between the apps, but most users probably will share.

Still, if it's something that bothers you, just go over to Feature Requests :)
