Color Picker for Stroke and Fill

Affinity Photo 2.0.3 macOS Ventura

I want to add an ellipse with no fill. I want to select the stroke color from the photo.

I can do each step except I can't pick a color from the photo for the stroke. 

Choosing a color from the color wheel works fine, but choosing a color from the photo doesn't.

Not immediately obvious and unnecessarily fiddly, but possible.

1) Draw an ellipse with no fill colour.

2) Set the stroke weight as required (colour will probably change to black).

3) Click the Stroke colour swatch (may take a couple of tries).

4) Click the circular colour sampler to the right of the dropper.

5) Drag the sampler over the image to your desired colour, click.

6) Click the dropper.

 

 

 

 

Stroke changes to desired colour.

Is the photo layer (background layer) selected in the layer panel when you tried to pick up the color with the color picker?

Yes. I checked because I've made the mistake before of having the wrong layer selected.
