Vectorizing a Selection Path?

Recommended Posts

I know this topic has been brought up before.  The most recent thread I could find was from a few years ago.

I need to convert a section path into a vector path for a clipping path (to eliminate the white background box).  Photoshop can do this, but I don't believe Affinity Photo can, yet.  (I'm brand new to Affinity)

If it still can't, I recall someone had mentioned a supplemental vector program that would work.  Any suggestions on this would be appreciated.

Hopefully Affinity will add this feature soon.

Thanks in advance.

No, Affinity cannot trace pixel content yet. But we all hope we will eventually get that feature during our remaining lifespan…

I need to convert a se[le]ction path into a vector path

For example:

  1. create a simple blank pixel layer and select it in the Layers panel
  2. fill your selection marquee with a black fill
  3. File > Export > PNG > Area: Selection Only
  4. navigate e.g. to vectorization.org
  5. upload the exported PNG
  6. download the vectorized SVG
  7. open the SVG with Photo (do not place it because you want it editable)
  8. copy the Curves layer(s) from the SVG
  9. paste them into your Photo document
  10. align it precisely to the marquee selection by using Snapping > Snap To Pixel Selection Bounds
  11. do whatever else you need/want to do with it…

However, the next time you may perhaps want to proceed exactly the other way around and create your selection directly in vector by using the Pen tool, Shapes, or by switching the document to Designer (if you also have it: File > Edit In Designer) and draw the selection with the vector Pencil tool.
