Can Images in Affinity Design be blended like in Affinity Photo?

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone! I searched for an *in Design tutorial but only found ones for Photo. I would like to blend two images in Design using the gradient tool like one does in Photo.

Like many of you, I bounce between programs when working on something but for this particular project it would be so much easier to blend the photos in Design - that is, of course, if this is possible? Thanks for any tips or links!

ps - you can see the starry sky in the top of the attached image - that is actually two images (one with its opacity adjusted) - ideally I would like a smoother transition between the images!

A simple way is to add a rectangular shape as vector mask to the upper image. It must be nested to masking position.

set color to white (this is arbitrary), and use the transparency tool to set a nice transition.

Another way is to use a mask, and use the fill tool, or paint with different gray colors.

Please find a video below, recorded on iPad. On Desktop, the steps are similar.

  1. I have a blue rectangle (background image) and red rectangle (foreground image)
  2. I add the rectangle in white as top layer
  3. move to masking position of foreground layer
  4. activate transparency tool
  5. set start and end node to taste
  6. You can see how both images are blended

Why not use the Transparency tool on the top layer directly?

Those are placed/embedded images, not pixel layers. They behave like shapes.
Being a vector attribute, the Transparency tool doesn't work on pixel layers, but it will work if you simply group a pixel layer with itself and apply the transparency gradient to the parent group container.
