how do I import a picture directly from my scanner?

You probably can't unless all three of the following are true:

  1. You are using a Mac
  2. You are running Affinity Photo V1 or V2
  3. Your scanner shows up as a device of you select File > Acquire Image... in the window that appears.

For #3, the scanner driver software that you can get from its maker must be compatible with the version of the macOS you are running. If it is it will appear there & also in the Mac Image Capture application as a supported device.

You better use a native scanner app, and save as tiff file preferably with RBG/16 format. Then open the file in Photo.

This workflow avoids multiple issues, and gives you consistent results on every OS, with any scanner.

I have Photo as the default program to open .tiff files. When VueScan saves a scanned image (as tiff), it automatically opens it in Photo.

Simplifies the workflow.
