Jim Monson
I am new to Affinity Designer (AD). Although it is straightforward to learn, I still do not understand why groups of objects are visible when outside a created layer but when placed within a layer they are no longer visible. When moved outside again they are again visible. (They are always checked visible.) Could you point me to a post on this or explain. Thanks. Staff MEB Posted February 4, 2016 Staff Share Posted February 4, 2016 Hi Jim, Welcome to Affinity Forums :) Without seeing a screenshot of your layer structure it's difficult to guess what's going on (or a dropbox link to a sample file - since new users can't upload files in the begining). Are you sure you are placing the objects inside another layer instead of inside another object (layer clipping)? Jim Monson
Thanks, MEB. If this message is not cleat then I'll try a dropbox link. Thanks much for your help. Jim 1) I imported an Illustrator file, and everything went well and was visible (great option!!), but only objects appeared in the layer structure. No Illustrator layers appeared. 2) Then I organized these object by creating layers and dragging the objects into a layer, but as I did, the objects disappeared from the screen. 3. I always dropped an object into a layer I had created and not in another object. 3) When I dragged an object or group of objects out of aa layer, they again appeared on the screen. Staff MEB Posted February 4, 2016 Staff Share Posted February 4, 2016 1. This is expected, we don't keep Ai layer structure when importing. 2. Do you have the layer visible? there must be a check in the checkbox on the right of the layer Also check the Opacity and Blend mode on the top of the layers panel. By default It must be set to 100% and Passthrough. Again, without a file it's difficult to guess what may be happening. You can PM me a link if you don't want to post it publicly. All files will be deleted after being checked. Quote A Guide to Learning Affinity Software
JimmyJack
Apart from the layer structure thing.... I believe you're creating Pixel layers and not Vector layers. If you try to put anything in a Pixel layer, the parent will want to clip it. But since there's nothing in the parent, nothing will show.... it's all being clipped. In short, in this case.... use Add Layer and not Add Pixel Layer. Then do your drag and drop thing. That's my guess anyway.

Jim Monson
Your guess is right on, JimmyJack. I had noted the two types of layers and started with a simple layer rather than a Pixel Layer ... but then my Illustrator experience moved in and I created the Pixel Layer on the right without noting the "pixel" by each layer name. You guys have a lot of patience with a newcomer. Much appreciated. All is well, and I'm extremely happy with AD.
