How to 'select' click specific nodes?

I have recently starting working with nodes but would like to figure out a way to select only the *specific nodes I want move around.

For example: I select a star shape, add more 'Sides,'  Convert to Curves,' press 'Transform' and then see more nodes corresponding to all the 'sides' I added - but I would like to select only all the outer nodes - I know about 'option' clicking but this does not work if you want to select only a certain set of nodes - can anyone help me with this?
