Can anyone help with a method to recreate this sunburst (see attached image). I stumbled across the image whilst browsing for fonts. I'm not going to use it as is - so no worries about copyright issues - I would just like to figure out how the component parts of this were made.

I got as far as the inner circle and the first row of rays, and then was a bit stumped! Any Affinity wizards out there who can offer a few tips? I know it'll involve the star/double star/cog tool?

Thanks in advance!

It looks like the Star tool used three or more times with the copies rotated. Then there would be different opacities or blend modes and finally a circle placed on top.

Mac Pro (Late 2013) Mac OS 12.7.6
Affinity Designer 2.6.0 | Affinity Photo 2.6.0 | Affinity Publisher 2.6.0 | Beta versions as they appear.

I have never mastered color management, period, so I cannot help with that.

The general procedure was this:

Import original picture and lock its layer.

Use ruler guides to locate the centre of the sun.

Draw sun then hide its layer.

Star tool for small star using Ctrl (draw from centre) and Shift (constrain). Hide its layer.

Star tool for large star using Ctrl (draw from centre) and Shift (constrain).

Rotate large star about its centre.  Hide its layer.

Draw rectangle, make copies and rotate copies about their centre.

Show each object in turn and use the colour picker tool to colour it from the original picture.

Arrange the front to back order of the items from the layers panel.

Use the attachment below 😉.

I’ve attached a short video showing one easy-to-do workflow.

  • First set most of the snapping options ON – I don’t know which is actually needed.
  • Next draw a Square Star, set the number of points to 16, and colour it.
  • Then draw a Star, set the number of points to 16, drag it so it snaps to the first Square Star, and colour it.
  • Then draw another Star, set the number of points to 16, rotate it by 360/number-of-points/2, drag it so it snaps to the first Star, and colour it.
  • Then draw an Ellipse and colour it.

When drawing the shapes start from the centre of the page and use Ctrl+Shift to keep the height and width the same.

My example is not exactly the same as the sample given but it’s easy to modify as can be seen near the end of the video.
