Hello.  I have pdf files from scanning my line art and I want to remove the white background. Using Affinity Photo, I went to Filters, colors, remove white paper. It looked right on the screen, with the grey checkered background, but when I exported it as a pdf, it still has the white paper background. I tried exporting iit as a png but the problem is still there. Help!

A PDF document by itself will have an automatic white background, even if the content is transparent. You can check that if you place the PDF back to Photo (File > Place, or drag and drop into the Photo window). You should still see the checkerboard background.

PNG with transparency must have the Matte color set to transparent. The default "PNG" preset should actually work out of the box. Again, if you open a PNG with transparency in a standard image viewer, the background will usually be automatically white. But e.g. the Preview app on MacOS should display a checkerboard background.

How do you know?

Are you printing onto a coloured paper, placing the image over a coloured background, or is it that you can faintly see a texture that the white background had?

Then you may need to increase the contrast or adjust the levels of your scans slightly so that absolutely no paper structure is visible before applying the Erase White Paper filter.
