Inconsistent Export Behavior

Recommended Posts

Hello...

So I've been encountering inconsistent export behavior that doesn't seem to have any rhyme or reason to it and it gets SOO friggin frustrating to never know from one instant to the next how Affinity Designer is going to decide to behave - it's incredibly disruptive to my workflow especially since it seems to change every time. Have seen this for at least a couple releases now. Currently on 1.4.1 as updated from the MAS.

What I'm experiencing: When I have an artboard selected within a document with multiple artboards and I go to File > Export..., sometimes the export mechanism will automatically choose for the "Area" dropdown that specific artboard only which is (for me anyway) the expected behavior. But sometimes (and I've not been able to figure out a pattern to it) it pre-selects the "Whole Document". In fact, funny enough, as I was writing this, in order to check the steps I took, it went from choosing the whole document the first time to choosing only the artboard I had selected the second time after saying "cancel".

ALSO and MOST FRUSTRATING OF ALL the dimensions in the export popup mechanism can never seem to get it right anymore. Used to work just fine until a couple releases ago. At the moment, for example, I have an artboard selected with dimensions of 708pt x 354pt and DPI of 144, but when I go to export it (doesn't matter what format), the export popup shows 1417px x 708px instead of the expected 1416px x 708px.post-16496-0-88246500-1453506081_thumb.png

Worse still, if I change one of those dimensions with the aspect ratio locked, it doesn't get the other dimension right. Using the current example, I just changed the short side to 354px (which should yield a change of the long side to 708px) and AD changed the long side to 448px!!! WTF?!?!post-16496-0-24022700-1453506095_thumb.png

I changed the long side to 708px and AD made the short side 559px instead of the expected 354px. post-16496-0-78530300-1453506088_thumb.png I'm attaching screenshots so you don't think I'm losing my mind (even though lately, AD has been making me lose it).

Messed up thing is, just like the inconsistency with whether AD chooses the individual artboard or the whole document, there is similar inconsistency with the way it chooses to respect aspect ratio - sometimes it works exactly as expected BUT I never know when that's going to happen and it works correctly much less frequently than it doesn't.

Hi PixelPoetix

Thanks for raising these issues.

We are already aware of the issue with aspect ratios being skewed on artboards beyond the first one when exporting hopefully this will get sorted soon

I have managed to replicate the extra pixel added in the artboard export size and I shall get this logged for the developers. This is caused by having partial pixels for the artboard's X and Y position. If you engage force pixel alignment before drawing artboards than it should help prevent this

I shall look into the changing area dropdown

Cheers

Hi, I'm also having trouble exporting selections right now. I have a group with the lowest object being a 1024 square, expected result is a 1024 x 1024 icon, but I can't for the life of me get Affinity to export 'Selection without background' any more. Used to be fine, but it's looking like 1.4.1 may have broken it?

Any clues gratefully received.

Cheers

Wayne

Hi Wayne

I'm having a bit of trouble reproducing this. If i select without background then I don't get the background. What format are you exporting to? Also if you could provide a sample files for us to look at that would great

Cheers

Exporting to png. Each icon has a blank (no stroke, no fill) underneath it to act as the bounds of the selection for export. Try the purple guy at the bottom, with the black outline, he was the one I was having trouble with. You may need to remove the black stroke actually, coz I resorted to adding that so that I could crop him out after exporting the whole image.

Yeah, so select an icon, then export selected without background in png. I could only get it to export large chunks of the image (the 'icons' group?)

Hi Wayne

I've just tried your file. This seems to be working perfectly fine for me I able to export all of the icons without a background without any issues. Can you check that there is no matting set for the PNG export in More options button?

Cheers

Hi SLowmo75, Chris,

I'm able to reproduce this. It's exporting a document with1664 x 2626px rather than 512px.

Not sure what's happening here... all other icons seem to export with the correct size.

[EDIT] there's something wrong when creating a slice from it's layer too. It also generates a slice corresponding to the area used when exporting just the selection using File ▸ Export.

I'm logging this to be looked at.

Solved! For me, at least - not sure if PixelPoetix is still having trouble?

Turns out that my offending icon group had a rouge and empty 'compound' layer that was left in the top left corner.

For some reason, selecting the group did not 'include' the layer contents, so the bound box was still looking normal, but once export selected was checked, it then took the rouge layer into consideration and made the export dimensions large.

So, to 'discover' the offending layer I selected the layers within the group, rather than the group folder itself. This was the only way to show the bounds, the group itself somehow ignored this naughty layer!

Long story, but hey, it might help someone!

Cheers

Wayne

Have you guys made any progress wth this issue?  it currently makes export without background almost useless as it seems to keep the unmasked dimensions of things that are within masks.  Please advice.

Alejandro.
