Lagging and freezing when painting in Affinity 2 products

I am experiencing a great deal of lag when doing basic painting in Affinity Designer. It happens with any brush and the smudge tool. I predominantly use Affinity Designer 2, but the same issue occurs in AP 2 on the same document. After even just a few minutes painting, Designer or Photo begins to lag and sometimes freezes completely causing me to force quit.

I have reduced the document size from 16 x 12 inches to 14 x 10 inches to see if that helps, but the lag continues. The file size is about 40 MB. I have opened an exported png of the document in another digital art app, but have not experienced any lag. The document is roughly the same size in both software.

I'm using a 2019 27 inch iMac, with OSX Ventura, and a 2019 Wacom Cintiq 16 inch display. My computer has recently been serviced and upgraded with 16G RAM and 1 TB SSD.

Hardware acceleration is off.

Thank you for your time

Hi @Gingamegs welcome to the forums,

This may be a situation which would benefit from enabling Hardware acceleration instead of disabling, have you tried the same workflow but with H/A enabled?

If you're still experiencing the same issue, could you provide me with a screenshot of your performance preferences, a sample file and a screen recording which demonstrates your issue? I can provide a private dropbox link if needed.

Many thanks in advance!
