Possible to change clone tool source select from Alt+click to Ctrl+click?

Recommended Posts

Photo 2 on Windows 11

Subject says it all: Often (but not every time -- haven't nailed the pattern yet) when I Alt+click to select my clone source, the main menu gets activated by Alt. It then takes another Alt press to deactivate so I can clone. I don't recall this happening in Photo 1 but it can make cloning downright clumsy in Photo 2.

It would be nice to have a non-UI-"listening" key for use with the clone tool. I thought I read somewhere how that could be done but I might be confusing another program (I've been working on learning about three simultaneously, so...).

Any ideas? Thanks.

The main menu should only be activated (highlighted) when you press and release the ALT key

So, it's possible...

1. You release the ATL key a fraction of a second before clicking

2. You think you clicked but the click is not registered and then you release the ALT key thinking it was

With my Pen and Windows 11, I get quite a few unregistered clicks - not sure why at the moment just something I need to look out for

If correct they were probably mine. I apologise for any mistakes made by my AI - I'm sure it will improve with time.

Yes, both certainly could be true... but if so the clone source wouldn't be registered if Alt wasn't down at the time of the click, which it is. So apparently I'm clicking while Alt is down. In that case why is the menu responding?

Weird.

Long shot, but it is possible that your Alt key is slightly faulty so that there is a brief disconnection while you are holding it down. (A while back I had a problem with a shift key doing something similar.)

True, that's possible, but this is a pretty new DasKeyboard (10 months old) and I've had zero issues otherwise. Plus it just started with Photo 2. Also it happens with both Alt keys

More info from additional testing. One thing I forget to mention is I'm using a Wacom Intuos S tablet.

Actually with my mouse, it works correctly:

  1. Press Alt
    1. Menu is activated (hotkeys are underlined)
  2. Select source with mouse left-click
  3. Release Alt
    1. Menu is deactivated
  4. Clone

But with the tablet:

  1. Press Alt
    1. Menu is activated (hotkeys are underlined)
  2. Select source by tapping the pen once
  3. Release Alt
    1. Menu is still activated
  4. Press Alt again to deactivate menu
  5. Clone

There are no relevant settings in the Wacom control panel nor Photo preferences that I can find. I tried the same thing with GIMP, but it uses Ctrl instead of Alt.

Think I'll post this with Serif as a bug.

  • 2 months later...

I'll check it out, thanks. Is there a plan to address it properly in Photo so no workaround is required? Just being able to configure the modifier key would solve it for me.

No luck. I can assign Alt and it works for cloning just like the keyboard but still has the menu focus issue. So I guess the tablet is assigning it perfectly, too perfectly...
