Affinity Photo: Is it just me or are Refine Selection and Refine Mask completely messed up?

Recommended Posts

Maybe it's because I'm working on a 9000x7200px document?

I get tons of lines in my mask or selection pretty much all the time, or other random noise that makes the Refine function nearly useless.

Do you have a sample file we can play with to see what happens our end?

What OS and systems specs do you have?

The Refine Selection or Refine Mask seem ok, BUT I've noticed in AP2, the Brush outline for Brushes, (Selection, Paint and Inpainting) is not there. Just a crosshair.

Ok,

Caps lock apparently has no affect in AP V1, but I see where it does in the subsequent versions. Thank you and my PC thanks you for extending it's life... :)😂

Yes, let me know where to upload it. It's larger than usual. I will also upload system specs and such.
Only thing unusual about the file is larger than usual px dimensions.

Roughly speaking I'm using:

  • System SKU    LENOVO_MT_82RF_BU_idea_FM_Legion 5 Pro
  • Processor    12th Gen Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-12700H, 2300 Mhz, 14 Core(s), 20 Logical Processor(s)
  • NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3070 Ti Laptop GPU (8GB)
  • Intel(R) Iris(R) Xe Graphics Family
  • OS Name    Microsoft Windows 11 Home
    Version    10.0.22621 Build 22621
  • Installed Physical Memory (RAM)    32.0 GB
    Total Physical Memory    31.7 GB
    Available Physical Memory    18.5 GB
    Total Virtual Memory    47.1 GB
    Available Virtual Memory    20.3 GB

Only thing unusual about the OS config that I can think of is I'm *trying* to use "HDR" display mode, and I have Process Lasso running.

Do you get the same problem with a smaller file?

Does it still happen with hardware acceleration off?

Good question. I will try later and report back.

Ok here is an example of the horizontal and vertical line noise I'm seeing when I try to Refine Mask and change any sliders:

image.png.71fd12ccefd0b6f493e2c39f550f5baf.png

This seems to stop happening if I turn off OpenCL hardware acceleration.

I don't know if this is a problem with Affinity, or if the issue is that I have "gaming" GPU which comes overclocked by default (compared to "scientific computing" GPU hardware) for mAxImUm GaMiNg pErFoRmAnCe DoOdZ and with the "game ready" nvidia drivers.

For now I guess I will leave OpenCL acceleration turned off (anything else I should disable?) but I do want to play games on this laptop though so if anyone has any advice on system config or switching between "studo" and "game ready" drivers, or changing the clock speed between the lower numerically reliable speed and the aWeSoMe FPSz D00d default "gaming" overclock let me know.

Hi @Print Monkey,

Thanks for your report and our sincerest apologies for the delayed response here. We are exceptionally busy following the release of V2 and we thank you for your continued patience and understanding here.

I have been testing this further here, with Hardware Acceleration enabled and with an image that is 10,000px x 7,000px and I'm not seeing the same issue currently - however I don't have a HDR monitor currently.

Can you please confirm for me:

If you disable HDR mode in Windows, does this issue still occur?

Can you also please open Windows Run (Windows Key + R) then paste the following and press OK: colorcpl

In the dialog that opens, please provide a screenshot of your settings here for me.

Many thanks in advance!

I took a while to get back to it as well. Disabling hardware accel seemed to work around the prob for the time being so I hadn't kept working on it.

For the requests:

1) Haven't gotten around to this yet

2) Ok here is what I have set up fwith HDR enabled:

Thanks for letting me know and the information provided here, I have logged this information with our team for further investigation as unfortunately I don't personally have a HDR monitor for testing.

As you've mentioned, I'd recommend keeping Hardware Acceleration disabled until our team can resolve this issue, many thanks!
