Designer V1 crashes on font selection entry

Recommended Posts

OS: Windows 10 (and have tried with exactly the same results under Windows 11 on a different system)

Hardware acceleration is enabled

STEPS TO REPRODUCE:

- Create any new document

- Add some text and highlight it with Ctrl + A

- Click on the font entry field in the top left

- Start typing a font name

- The application will crash and close

Attached is a screenshot taken just before typing in a font name

Only modifications added to these systems of any relevance are fonts installed that are not included in the OS by default (commonly used ones such as Montserrat and Inter were installed)

Has only been happening recently

Just want to confirm that I have experienced the exact same behavior.

I can add that if I type the letter Q or multiple instances of this chareacter (e.g. typing "qqqqqq" then Publisher does not crash for me. Typing the letters A and D at least made the application crash (I haven't tried all letters...).

Workaround is to select the font by scrolling down the list and selecting the font using the mouse.

OS: Windows 11

Publisher version: 1.10.5.1342 (latest)

HW accelleration: enabled

Hi, I think you may have encountered this known issue when running v1 on a Windows 10 or 11 machine with certain Microsoft updates installed. The workaround is to remove the Microsoft update.

Hello,

MikeTO, thank you so much for the link, much appreciated!

Do you know what are the consequences of uninstalling those Windows updates? I have checked the description of many of those updates, and for those I checked, I see this description: "There are no new security improvements in this release. This update is cumulative and contains all previously released security improvements.". I also see this statement: "reliability improvements in .NET Framework 3.5 and 4.8. We recommend that you apply this update as part of your regular maintenance routines" (the text is not bold in the original text).

Those statements make me quite reluctant to remove those updates, since it seems that would be going against the recommendation from MS and also actually removing both "security improvements" and "reliability improvements".

I can't really see if Affinity/MS is actively working on a solution, but at least they are aware of it.

Thank you!

Sorry, I don't know that as I'm a Mac user. However, Microsoft broke something in these updates which impacts any app that relies on a particular component of Windows. Serif is recommending that you uninstall the updates to continue using v1.

I believe v2 doesn't rely on this component of Windows and isn't affected by this issue.

UPDATE for anyone still using V1 Affinity applications -

Versions 1.10.6 of the Affinity suite have been released, which resolve these .NET Windows crashes.

Please see the below link for information on how to download and install these updates:

With the Affinity updates installed, you can now un-hide any previous Windows updates you have paused and install these without concern.
