Yes, you can uninstall V1. (And this is true on both Mac and Windows).

However, be sure to wait until you've migrated everything you need from V1 into V2. Some of the migration can happen automatically, but some must be done manually or must be redone in V2.

Also:

  1. If you ever collaborate with anyone, remember that users with V1 cannot open native Affinity files created in V2. This can also apply to you, if you ever find a problem in V2 and need to work in V1 to get an important project done.
  2. Some of us occasionally refer back to V1 to see how something worked when assisting other users, or when we're confused about something in V2.

After a few days, it seems I'm the lucky one, and don't need V1 anymore. Everything works fine. But there are many people on the forum, which struggle. As Walter suggested, be sure to transfer your brushes (and make them synced), transfer your keyboard shortcuts (if you need to, I realized V1 work well in V2, but they don't transfer automatically). I'm not sure with assets since I don't use the feature. But yes, be 100% sure, you've transferred everything you need, you can't do it, once V1 is uninstalled.

Thank you both walt.farrell and Stepaan for your helpful replies. I will leave V1 on both computers for now to test whether or not I need it for anything as I go. I also have to learn how to transfer the files you mention. But this answers my question. It would be nice if Affinity gave us a list of all the settings and files we might want to transfer to help us avoid a disaster, or make V2 automatically install our V1 settings and useful files when it installs. Thanks again for helping out so fast walt.farrell and Stepaan.

V2 will try to transfer some things, like brushes and assets and styles that you've manually installed. It might be successful.

It will not transfer studio presets, develop presets, keyboard shortcuts and some others (I don't have a full list). Some of those you can copy the internal files within the file system. That's relatively easy on Windows, harder on Mac. Some may not be compatible, so it's a bit risky.

For the brushes... The best practice is walk through all 3 apps (if you own all three) and check the Brushes palette. You should see the link (or shopping bag) icon next to it. It means, those brushes converted well to the V2 Shared Brushes. You can export and then import the Brushes without the link icon to make them linked. The advantage is, they're stored just once across the suite.

The same goes for Assets.

You can also save V1 Keyboard Shortcuts under Preferences -> Keyboard Shortcuts and load them into V2.

Also, I was able to transfer various Persona Workspaces (on Windows). The path for the V1 source Workspaces is (in case of Designer for example)
%USERPROFILE%\AppData\Roaming\Affinity\Designer\1.0\Workspaces\Custom\
the destination:
%USERPROFILE%\.affinity\Designer\2.0\Workspaces\Custom\

This is great! I think Walt and Stepaan have led me to the goal here. Thanks, Stepaan for the images and detailed locales for the files. I'm on it. I'll definitely link everything I can. I have the "universal" V2 package, so that's all three apps. I had all three as individual apps in V1. I'll just have to make sure each one is transferred and will try with linking first. Also, when I installed V2 Universal, most or maybe all of my brush purchases were able to be re-downloaded and added to V2 automatically. But there may be others not listed or those other files will still need to be ported over. Once again, thanks for the insights and great explanations.

How can I move V1 that I purchased from Affinity to a thumb drive, so that all 3 personas will work if by chance I need to do something on a V1 persona? I'm running low on SSD space, I have the Affinity 2.1 suite installed and working.

I think you might need to uninstall V1, then reinstall. Reinstallation is when you get the choice of where to install.

I'm not sure a thumb drive is appropriate, though. A larger USB drive might be better.

Also, much of the data is in your AppData folders (see the FAQ below for the location), and moving that might be sufficient. I'll include a post below about doing that, too.

Walt, from the discussion above, it seems you can have  V1 and V2 installed at the same time -- ie, installing V2 doesn't overwrite V1. I have an unfinished Publisher V1 document which presented layout problems (see "erratic behaviour of text styles"). Now that these seem to have been resolved, I am reluctant to transfer to V2 until it is finished. Do I have the option of working on new documents in V2 but keep V1 for the old document? I'm less concerned about Photo.

Yes, you can have both versions installed, and you can use whichever you want. But note that V1 won't be able to Open anything that was Saved by V2.

Phew! Thank you for that reassurance. I will open the document in V2 and then save it as "Document_v2" to clearly distinguish them. I will make sure I open the app first before opening the document so that I don't accidentally upgrade it.
