Greetings,

Since, as I understand it, only the color picker from the Color Panel can be used for sampling colors from outside the AP window (the Color Picker tool only samples from within AP), I would like to be able to set the sampling radius to something bigger than 1x1 (like you can for the tool). Is this already possible and I just can't find it?

(just to clarify since this is confusing... there are two color pickers.. one is the "tool" itself, and one is the picker that you can drag from the color panel. The former lets you change the radius, and the latter lets you sample from other windows.  But can I do both?)

Thank you in advance.

I don't think it is but I would be happy to be proven wrong.

Both tools actually let you pick the color from within the whole screen, and both tools are affected by the sample radius. Note that when using the Color Picker tool, you need to click, hold and drag to get color values beyond the source window (otherwise sampling is limited to the source window).

On the other hand. it seems that the sample radius only works within the source window canvas where either of these tools is activated. If you sample from outside the source window canvas, you always seem to get 1 x 1 radius sampling area.

At least at some point I think that there were also differences in these tools on macOS and Windows, but I only checked the operation now on Windows (and using Photo V2). I think that the differences between the OSs were related to translation of color values (on Windows copied color values seem to be translated to target color space and profile, but at some point it think that on macOS color values were simply copied, meaning that the appearance of copied color could be radically different in the target window while on Windows appearance would tried to be retained and color value changed).

I may be wrong, but the answer to your question seems to be that (at least on Windows) you cannot adjust the sampling radius when sampling outside of the source canvas, no matter which picker tool you use.

Fair enough. This is not crucial to my workflow--more of a nice-to-have. But thank you both for letting me know. (I can stop digging around for settings!)

Please note that I was wrong about the Color Picker Tool -- like @lacerto said, you just have to hold down the mouse button when starting to use it to pick a color from outside the app window.
