I need to fade the edges of a photo, to transparency.   I've seen how to do one edge with a gradient mask, but for all four edges, that's cumbersome.  And I'll definitely have to adjust it later, so any method that uses static, rasterized masks is out.

Is there some easy-to-use filter or effect that does this?

Easiest way is to use a Rectangle with a Gaussian Blur effect on it and use that as a clipping mask. You can enter any number greater than 100 directly into the Radius area.

Affinity Designer 2.6.0 | Affinity Photo 2.6.0 | Affinity Publisher 2.6.0 | Beta versions as they appear.

I have never mastered color management, period, so I cannot help with that.
