I had a look at the trial version of the new release v2. and was surprised and a little annoyed that after saving in 2. I was unable to open the file again in v1. despite not having edited anything and certainly not using any of the new features.

I think is bad, I can open all sorts of PSD files in Photo so I would expect at least some fall back option, not being left with delete or upgrade to the new version.

I was clever enough to test on an old file so nothing important was lost, and I may still upgrade in the future, but not now.

I didn't see a warning about this and it maybe I missed it, if not it needs to be there.

All the best, I love Affinity tools but this is not good.

It says in the "what's new" and FAQ that the new and old formats are not compatible.

Usually when file types are not forward compatible (when you break backwards compatibility), the file type name is changed so the two files cannot be confused, like .afphoto2.

It's not great that we can't tell the difference between v1 and v2 files.

That would require having a whole bunch of new file types, given that we have afphoto, afdesign, afpub, afbrushes, afassets, afpackage, afstyles, afpresets, and more that I can't think of at the moment.

A message is needed when opening one of the afphoto, afdesign, or afpub files from V1 in V2, and we should have one shortly.

But new file types would create more problems, in my opinion.

You might be right, but I still find it ironic/annoying that I now have to export files in PSD, PDF, or other third-party formats, in order to share with other Affinity people who have not upgraded to V2.

One of the things that I enjoy about the Affinity trio is being able to open a file in one programme and switch to another if that seems better suited to the task. If I need forwards compatability (and that would be a very rare thing in my thirty-plus years' experience) I will just have to remember to save a copy with a different name, leaving the version 1 file unsaved in version 2. The real test is, of course, at what point do you decide the new version is stable and you really don't need the old one any more. I've very rarely had a file crash in Affinity v1 - in fact, I can't think of an instance - so I hope to make the transition soon.

it seems a bit odd to be able to switch between the programs (also one of my favourite functions), but then V1 not being able to open V2-files.
Are there plans to be able to 'import' V2 files and if necessary the affected layers/functions are rasterized or converted?!

As version 2 files cannot be read by version 1, and there will be no further updates to version 1 (as per the information on the web site), that obviously will not be happening.

In theory it would be possible for version 2 to save an older-format file, but Serif has already indicated this would be difficult for them to support, and the implication is that they most likely will not be doing so.

Currently the most effective way to get data from version 2 into version 1 is to copy and paste from one to the other.

Nothing about this is new or unexpected: older versions within the version 1 series generally could not open files saved by newer versions within the version 1 series.  This is simply an extension of what was already the case.

ok, just good to know that moving to V2 means you got to commit then.

I thought I had read info that V1 would still receive updates, but after chasing down that tweet again, it seems that this was about fixing issues that could arise with V1 and updates to operating systems.

IMHO, while it's great you can open newer PS files in older versions, it also speaks to how much adobe doesn't do squat to upgrade their file formats.

Horribly slow compression, and extreme bloat if you don't use compression etc.

If you export as a TIFF file or something else that retains some aspects of the file structure, can you import it into Affinity Photo v1?

I have a studio with multiple Macs, some running 10.13.6 and 10.14.6 and others 11.6.3 Affinity 2 will not install on the older system Affinity 1 cannot share files with Affinity 2 this has ruined the studio workflow

It sounds like you need to stick with V1 until you can replace the older Macs.
