affinity icon disappeared on thumbnails in explorer

Recommended Posts

hey all,

after upgrading to the v2 suite, my thumbnails no longer display the proper affinity icon in the corner of the thumbnail in explorer. it appears as no different than the actual image files in the same folder. this is extremely disruptive to my workflow as i often save my af files in the same folder as the source images, and not being able to open my file at a glance is extremely inconvenient when this functionality was available in v1. is this a bug, or was this behaviour removed? if it's the latter, i'd like to request it be added back in to avoid a regression from v1

Welcome to the Serif Affinity forums. Sorry you're having a problem.

I haven't seen that on my Windows systems.

Please tell us what version of Windows you're running, and provide a screenshot of what you're seeing in File Explorer. (Also, if you do not have File Explorer configured to show file extensions, please enable that option so we can be sure what kind of files we're looking at.)

thank you for the reply, i am currently running windows 10 professional 22H2, build 19045.2251, all current on patches

provided in the attachment below is a screenshot of how afphoto files display now when affinity photo 2 is the handler for afphoto files next to a rendered image otherwise identical to the file. the only differentiator is a small border that windows adds to image files, which is nowhere near good enough to differentiate in a folder full of photos and takes beside their afphoto counterparts

the previous behaviour displayed an icon for the app in the corner, which was great quality of life so i am baffled as to why it has gone missing in v2

this is also not exclusive to photo 2 - designer & publisher also have gotten rid of the corner icon and these should also be added back as well

Just wondering: Is the folder you're using managed by OneDrive? For example, Documents often is, and OneDrive causes some problems.

If it is managed by OneDrive, do you see the problem in a new folder you create that is definitely not managed by any Cloud program (OneDrive, Google Drive, DropBox, ...)?

nope, i have onedrive disabled and do not use any other cloud storage sync solutions on this computer. i only created the folder there for ease of access in displaying the problem, this occurs regardless of where in the system an affinity file is located, and has only begun happening after i set the v2 suite as the default to open & handle affinity files instead of v1

Thanks.

I saw another report where someone from Serif said it's a known issue they've reported to the Developers. So it does seem to be a bug. Thanks for noticing and mentioning it.

Any ideas for missing thumbnails for files saved out of designer and photo?

This topic is about the Affinity icon being missing on the thumbnails, not the thumbnails being missing. If your problem is with the thumbnails themselves, perhaps you should find a different topic or start your own?

I suddenly have this same problem. Have been using Affinity Photo Version 2 for a couple of days. Suddenly, there is no Affinity logo on the thumbnails in windows 11 file explorer.

Welcome to the Serif Affinity forums.

At this point about all we can do is wait for the Developers to provide a fix. Perhaps this one will be in the next update, which is rumored to include a larger set of fixes than 2.0.4 did, which was focused on a few high priority items.

I asked as I haven't seen a peep about this anywhere.

If you look at the top of the topic you'll see it has a bug tag, AFP-5629, and clicking it will bring up a list of topics that have that tag.

Any topic where the Moderators have acknowledged an issue should have a tag like that. Usually the topic will also have a comment by a Moderator, but sometimes as they pass by they decide that the discussion doesn't need any additional comment, and just add the tag.

Hi @KCP
Thanks for your report, I have updated the relevant ticket with your example.

This issue is currently under investigation with the devs, this post should get an update from the Serif Info Bot when it has been fixed.

Just to confirm, our team believe that this icon issue appears to occur with the MSIX installer version of the Affinity V2 apps, and not with the EXE versions.

If you wish to switch, please uninstall the Affinity V2 apps from 'Apps & Features', then visit the below links and download the EXE versions of the apps, using the Also Available : EXE option:

Photo - https://store.serif.com/update/windows/photo/2/

Designer - https://store.serif.com/update/windows/designer/2/

Publisher - https://store.serif.com/update/windows/publisher/2/

Once you've downloaded the EXE versions of the apps, install these as normal. You may need to restart your PC before these icons are shown on your files as expected.

I hope this helps :)

Please note -

I am currently out of the office for a short while whilst recovering from surgery (nothing serious!), therefore will not be available on the Forums during this time.

Should you require a response from the team in a thread I have previously replied in - please Create a New Thread and our team will be sure to reply as soon as possible.

Many thanks!
