I am using latest version of Publisher with the latest version of Windows 10.

I'm setting up a book.  I've got the margins of the left and right pages setup so there's a bigger gutter towards the spine of the book.  I've got two linked text frames setup and aligned with the margins of the pages, but it turns out I need to move the text frame on the right hand pages a bit further over to the right, so that it falls slightly outside the margin but on the left page it remains aligned.  If I now click on the autoflow icon while pressing the shift buton I would expect all the new pages to be completed with the left page frame aligned to the margin and the right page frame to be slightly further to the right, but what actually happens is the left is automatically moves the equivalent amount to the left.

Any ideas how I can workaround this please?

Are you using Master/Parent pages with Text frames? Is/are the Master/Parent page two page spreads or single pages?

If you use a two page spread for the Master/Parent page with the Text Frames linked on them then when you apply the Master/Parent page to the actual pages you'll not need to draw any text frames on the Actual pages.

I have never mastered color management, period, so I cannot help with that.

Yes, you just need to use master pages. Create a facing pages document and set the margins normally. Draw frames on both sides of the master spread, link them together, and shift the right frame to the right to do what you want. The first page of the document will have a text frame inherited from the right side of the master spread. Paste your text into this frame, auto flow, and Publisher will create additional pages just like you have them setup on the master page.

Two more tips:

  • you can base a master page on a master page
  • you can apply more than one master page to a page

These two features let you keep things simple - I create a master page for my layouts, I have three basic layouts in my book. But each chapter has its own tabs and footers so instead of creating complex masters for each chapter I just create a master with the additional elements required for each chapter and then I apply both the layout master and the chapter master to each page.

Ah yes, some very interesting tips - thank you.

To apply a secondary master untick "replace existing" in the apply master dialog.

Also nesting master pages is very clever idea.
