Hi Geoffrey,

Welcome to Affinity Forums :)

If you want to end with a single shape, just select the two then go to menu Layer ▸ Geometry ▸ Combine (or click on the Combine icon on the main toolbar on top, in the Operations section).

If you want to end up with a compound shape, that is, a group of two (or more) shapes that are combined into one but that are still editable independently, select both shapes, press and hold ⌥ (option/alt) and click the Combine icon on the main toolbar on top, in the Operations section.
