Rasterise & Trim not working

Recommended Posts

I have a transparent PNG where I want to trim the image to the non-transparent pixels. As far as I have searched around within Affinity Designer I can use the "Rasterise & Trim ..." mechanic in the layer menu.

However nothing happens at all when I choose this option. No additional menu pops up (which I assume there would be since the action's name ends with ellipses) and the PNG stays the same.

Am I doing something wrong?

Obvious bug - no dialog pops up anymore.

What would you expect to happen?

The history only says "Rasterise".

So "Rasterise & Trim ..." is indeed not working as intended in the current version of Affinity Designer?

I want to trim the image to the non-transparent pixels. According to other threads here on the forum "Rasterize & Trim ..." can do that in Affinity Designer (in Affinity Photo it would be Document > Clip Canvas

Though according to that help article "Rasterize & Trim ..." does not seem to be the right tool for that. If that is the case - is there actually a way to trim an image in Affinity Designer to the non transparent parts?

The function does exactly what it is supposed to do - as is clear from my post, I am only responding to the incorrect use of "ellipsis".

In your screenshot, however, the image is cropped to opaque pixels. What else should be trimmed?

The additional menu pops up only if you have a Layer Effect applied. But it does do as it says without an Effect applied

If you mean trim the canvas to the size of your PNG, I don't think so

But you can copy the PNG layer then do File > New from Clipboard to get a new document of that size

Ah yes, I see what you mean.

Yes, that is what I meant. Too bad - but I get that Designer is may be not the right tool for the job, I was just wondering whether there was a way :) (and I incorrectly assumed "Rasterize & Trim ..." would do it).

@fritzmg

Clip Canvas is only available in Affinity Photo. Rasterize and trimming would then bring the result you expect.

It's a shame and, in my opinion, a error in the design that the "context" menu does not respect the context, i.e. the current state of the layer (presence/absence of fx).

At least for apps running on the macOS, I am not sure this could be supported by the code built into the OS that displays menu items, so if not, it would require special app level coding that might be impractical or difficult to implement because of how it could affect other menu items.

The context menu and its items are of course controlled at the application level, and should be based on the context (current state) of the object/element on which the menu is invoked. If the context menu items for a given type of objects/elements do not change according to reality (according to the current state of the elements/application), the main advantage and defacto meaning of the "context" menu is lost.

AFAIK, not completely, at least in the macOS. Apps can tell the OS if some menu item is not available & should be greyed out, but I do not think they can change the wording (including the ellipsis) of any menu item.

At least I have never seen this in any Mac app.

(not sure this saves any clicks vs copy + new from clipboard, but it does keep you in the same document)
In Designer you can use make Artboard from selection.
And, if that isn't enough you can then hit delete (with artboard selected). You will be asked if you want to keep the objects. Say yes, and you will be left with a "regular" canvas the size of your artwork.

Annnnnd, if this is possible there is no reason why a straight clip/crop-to-artwork isn't available.

(note: if you right click on the artboard in the layers panel and select delete, you will not be given the option to keep objects. An inconsistency I pointed out years ago which the devs were going to look into 😂)
