I agree; but just be prepared to pay the high license rates the foundries are asking for.

There are currently 258 variable fonts available from Google Fonts. All with free open source licenses. Even if you only counted the pre-defined instances within those variable fonts that is the equivalent of a few thousand static fonts.

And there are others in GitHub which are not in GF. Adobe Source Sans, Source Serif, and Source Mono. And Source Han Sans VF which is the equivalent of the 45 CJK fonts in the one TTC file, or separate static files. Science Gothic (based on classic Bank Gothic) is nearly done (will be in GF) and includes weight, width, slant, and contrast axes. Inter, the font you are reading here, is currently being upgraded to include an optical size axis (beta fonts available now). Playfair Display is currently being upgraded to variable and includes weight, width, and optical size axes.

And there are many more available now, or in-process.

There are even a few color variable fonts available, and more in development.

Lots of variable font options available now.

THANK YOU!!!!

You are a walking, typing resource ala VF's!

... I think it's time for affinity to sincerely consider (aka adopt) them.

Thanks again.

At this point I'm starting to think they're holding back important features like variable fonts and webp support to put into a 2.0 release we have to pay to upgrade to.

That's fine with me.  I pay for quality, and consider Affinity to be QUALITY.  (I want them around for a long time.)

I'm a type designer, I started out creating fonts recently after I bought Affinity Designer and I was teaching myself to work with vector graphics.

I've created several color fonts and a few variable fonts.

It's a shame that I can't use Affinity Designer or Affinity Photo to create mockups and promo images for my fonts. For that I have to resolve to either making screenshots of color fonts or variable fonts in the browser of Pixelmator Pro since I do my best to avoid Adobe software.

The most annoying thing for me is that no one at Serif seems to think this is the least bit important. There's a whole cottage industry for special display fonts and both variable fonts and color fonts are supported by nearly all major browsers.

If Affinity Designer supported variable fonts or color fonts it would be an invaluable resource not only for creating promo images, but for testing and quality control, because now a lot of my design process is a shot in the dark.
