I have been using Topaz Sharpener AI version 4 for some time now without problems. Recently, I used it again and, after clicking [Apply] it displayed the box with % completion as usual then, about half way through, my PC crashed completely. I had to switch it off at the wall before my PC would re-boot.

I repeated this with the Task Manager enabled and noted that throughout the entire processing, the GPU usage was at 90-100%. The CPU usage was around 50%. My Graphics card is a fairly low-spec Nvidia GFORCE GT630 with 2GM memory and PCI Express x16.

I have hardware accelleration disabled. Presumably this only applies to Photo itself, not the Topaz plugin.

I repeated this early in the day (when I have background anti-virus software running) and later in the afternoon (when it was not). Same result.

Could it be the latest version of Affinity Photo I am using? I am on version 1.10.5.1342. Or do I need a new graphics card with more memory? I am loath to by an expensive graphics card just to use Topaz Sharpener AI.

Does anbyone have any suggestions?

John

Hard to tell if APh is mainly involved here, since there are a bunch of crash reports on it's own for Topaz Sharpener AI v4.x, like for example ...

See also this GitHub Ghist which might be something to try out for Topaz Sharpener AI (instead of Topaz Video Enhance AI ) too then ...

Hi @John Rostron,

Sorry to hear you're having trouble!

I'd like to request a few different log/crash files from yourself to try and determine the exact cause of this.

Firstly, please open Windows Run (Windows Key + R) then paste the following string and press OK:

%AppData%\Affinity\Photo\1.0

In the window that opens, please select log.txt, then attach this to your reply here.

Secondly, in the same folder as above, please open CrashReports and then reports - if any reports have been generated, they will be found here. Please attach the latest 3 reports from this folder.

Finally, I'd like to request a copy of your event viewer log, to generate this please do the following.

1. Open Windows Run (Windows Key + R) and type the following - eventvwr
2. In the window that opens, select the Windows Logs drop-down list on the left and then Applications
3. With the Applications logs selected, navigate to the right side of the window and select Save All Events As... and save them as .evtx (the default option).
4. Attach this saved file to your reply here.

Your reply should hopefully include the log.txt, the 3 most recent .DMP crash reports, and the .evtx event viewer log.

Many thanks in advance :)

@Dan C,

Here are the various files as requested:

Log.txt

5cd847bc-5f2c-4be9-9e3e-f6a43a9f8929.dmp

5f4ea19b-4c46-49bb-8d03-fd5c815baba8.dmp

58cf67f1-59ef-43e4-a168-741ef2364a88.dmp

crash.evtx

On my last trial, I monitored the temperature of both the CPU and the GPU. The processing had reached 69% with the CPU at 68deg and the GPU 105deg  just before crashing.

Thanks,

John

Many thanks for providing those for me!

As v_kyr has mentioned, I can see the app is crashing in the Topaz Plugin itself -

Hopefully they are able to provide further support for you here :)

I have downloaded and installed the latest version of Sharpener AI and it still crashes - both as a plugin and as a standalone. I am  fairly certain that it is my underpowered graphics card. So, until it can afford a new card, I have uninstalled Sharpener AI.

Thanks to @Dan C and @v_kyrfor help .

Have you played with the preferences in Sharpen AI? You can even do all the processing in the CPU.

No, I will try that.

@RichardMH I have re-installed Topaz Sharpener AI (version 2) and tried it after disabling use of the graphics card. It worked fine, both as a  standalone and as a plugin. Thanks for your suggestion.

I had not thought to look for that option since when I tried out Topaz Gigapixel some time ago, it explicitly stated that it required a graphics card.

I now consider this matter resolved.
