I briefly used photoshop (trial) and was impressed with its content aware fill. The thinnest line and smallest dot where no problem. When I tried Affinity's version it was hit or miss. Sometimes it would do as I expected, but other times it would instead delete what I had highlighted, leaving simply transparency.

Have you encountered this? (My trial ran out so I can't show anything)

This would highly depend on the image you're editing, or the size of the area you are attempting to Inpaint - I appreciate you cannot show me directly, but are you able to attach a sample .afphoto file, or a copy of an image that behaved in this way for you to your reply here, so I can investigate further for you?

Many thanks in advance :)

Why is it dependent? Photoshop had no such restrictions. I chose Affinity because of being one of the few softwares to offer adjustment layers. It would be a shame if I couldn't depend on this crucial need. The other being adjustment layers which Affinity does fine at.

As luck would have it, I have an affinity file of the last one I worked on. I can't open it anymore of course. What I use the "inpaint" tool for was cleaning up fibres that were scanned, or dirt and any other small imperfections.

Apologies, this is what I was referring to in regards to being document dependant. as the transparency may be occurring due to the specific layer you're trying to inpaint, or whether the canvas has been cropped etc. In some scenarios it's not entirely unexpected for transparent areas to appear when using this tool.

Thanks for the file provided - although I'm unable to see any issues with the Pixel layer in this document. There are no transparent areas currently, and using the Inpainting tool is working as expected for me, allowing me to remove the dust spots and even the staples from the centre of the page without issue.

Was there a specific area of this pixel layer that was causing the issue with the Inpainting tool?

The only time I remember where the transparency occurred was at the top where (if you zoom right in) you can see grey lines. These used to be yellow, where the page was dirty/aged. Maybe it was the incorrect layer after all? I wouldn't know unless I brought the software. Might do on my ipad as photoshop is missing so many features (and is subscription only).

Thanks for getting back to me!

Thanks for confirming that for me! I've tested further in this area of your document and I've thus far been unable to replicate any transparency issues, as the tool continues to work as expected so this may have been a temporary 'hiccup' that doesn't occur again.

We do offer a full 14 day refund period when purchasing from the Affinity Store, so if you were to buy Affinity Photo for Desktop (we're unable to sell the iPad app directly) from our website and found the app as not right for you, or these issues returned and we're unable to resolve them, we could uninstall the app from your PC and refund you in full for the purchase :)
