Bonteburg Posted August 22, 2022 Posted August 22, 2022 Hello folks, First Post Alert! I stumbled upon a confusing situation where a forced line break resulted in a much larger leading than expected from the character settings. It turned out that it has to do with paragraph styles and leading overrides, something I had almost forgotten even existed. Since styles aren't exactly my way of doing things in most use cases (I find them to be rather stifling) I was wondering if there's some box I can tick globally where, in the absence of a style, a forced line break will honour the leading of the text? If I must use styles, is there a way to set its paragraph gap to, say, a percentage of the leading (ie 100 per cent) rather than a point value, so that I can create one paragraph style for any number of font sizes? Thanks! Marco Quote
walt.farrell Posted August 22, 2022 Posted August 22, 2022 Welcome to the Serif Affinity forums. How did you create that "forced line break"? The obvious choices are: Using a paragraph break, which gives you a new paragraph and whatever "space before" and "space after" settings are associated with either the paragraph text style in use of whatever is specified in the Paragraph panel for the unsettled text. or Using a line break, which maintains the current paragraph and should not interfere with any paragraph leading you're using. If you're using Publisher then Text > Show Special Characters will let you see which you're using. You can insert either one using the Text > Insert menu. Bonteburg Posted August 22, 2022 Author Posted August 22, 2022 Thanks! That actually helped me a lot. I used the Return key (my go-to "line break" command) which resulted in a paragraph. Using Shift+Return creates a simple new line: - - - - - Line of text Return Line of text Shift+Return - - - - - So now I learned a new key-command in the process! I'll try and see if I can reverse the key commands (for comfort zone reasons). But I'm fairly certain I can get used to the new one quickly, too. Quote

As far as I know you can't, and probably shouldn't as those are pretty standard key assignments.
