The day before the day is here, and, the hype is growing…

But, don’t be too happy before we see what Serif Labs will be announcing Tomorrow…

It can actually be a scenario that version 1.x and version 2.x will exists parallel with each other - version 1.x a one-time-purchase and version 2.x a subscription model…

And, the release of Affinity Publisher for iPad, will this really be now, or this year, no, I don’t think so…

More likely Serif Labs will show us an clone of Adobe Lightroom as part of the new subscription based Affinity Suite 2.0 - with an updated RAWfile engine…

Is that what your good friend who goes out to lunch with the Serif staff told you? - any other guaranteed news?

Serif staff have said  several times ver 1 & ver 2 WILL exist in parallel so you will be able to choose which version to use at any time. Most would use the new version, only using ver 1 if absolutely necessary to amend an existing file for compatibility.

Everything I have seen makes APub for ipad this year and not next year as you suggest.

Serif have ruled out subscription model that many time I wonder why people still think it is an option for them. It would have to be a massive U-turn.

I think switching to a subscription only model would break their neck. Not that I personally wouldn't accept a subscription model, since this is part of my daily work software. And if it was worth the price, I would pay it.

But seeing the shitstorm companies face when switching to a subscription, and how quickly they can be turned from saint to devil itself by the "community", this would plunge Affintiy/Serif into the tartarus of "yet another ex-Adobe-competitor-wannabe software". Celsys just had to face the storm after switching to a (reasonable in my eyes) subscription model. I guess they will cope with it, because their Clip Studio Paint is too good and their userbase is really large.

It's a question of whether the Affinity user base is large enough for Serif to deal with the sure loss of disappointed and resentful users.

Thus I don't think Serif is even seriously thinking about moving to the subscription model.

Designer beta forums are cleared!

Not just Designer.
In the case of the beta forums, it's quite okay - there simply won't be a beta version for version 1.x.
But how will this be handled for error reporting? That could be a nice mess. Hopefully Serif will create separate forum branches to distinguish the version/branch for which the error is being reported.

Usually, companies that have no new ideas to offer, accept the subscription model.

Alternatively, in order for a company to buy another company (eg Figma), someone has to pay those billions.

I remember the days when after 'in house' betas they sent out to registered 'beta testers', fixed the bugs then the program went on sale. We purchased, waited 3 days for the discs in the post and that was basically it until the upgrade version came out. I bought one program, found a 'bug' within days, reported it and it was fixed within 24 hours but I had to wait 3 days for the bug fixed version discs to arrive in the post.

Nowadays it seems that because most programs are download versions, update can be done daily (or more often it needs be), and programs can even 'report bugs' without user intervention that beta testing can be large scale over the customer base (well it seems that way with some programs & operating systems).

Are (not in house) beta testers really needed/used as much these days?

Around what time can we expect the announcement on the 9th? If it's around midnight I'll just stay up and wait for it

Serif are a UK based company so GMT is our timezone. Whether Serif consider it necessary to work 'out of hours' to release at midnight tonight I don't know but the interest in ver 2 means that if they did their bank balance will rise rapidly by 01:00

Especially if there will be a discount for the first 1000 applicants 🙂
