My (picture) save as on most www-sites gives me now a so called...webp file, instead jpg or png.

Well, the "expalanitions" sounds nice (smaller than jpg but more.... blabla) ...

Has anyone experience with this new format?

WebP is not new. Like JPEG but unlike PNG, it’s a ‘lossy’ format; like PNG but unlike JPEG, it supports transparency.

It is reasonably new, in usage.

It is a wrapper that attempts to obscure the interoperability of files from the internet/browser space with your onboard file system and OS. They don't sell it like this, of course. But it's exactly why Behance, Dribbble and Pinterest are using this mechanism.

If you're browsing the internet and find an image you're interested in, and come across this problem, use the browser's ability to view the source page, and locate the images folder. There you'll find the unwrapped images and be able to copy/save them as per normal.
