Getting Started Guidance on Affinity Photo

I have just installed “photo” turned it on … now what? I am totally new to this and need a tutorial that not only tells me what it can do but shows me how to actually how to do it.  I need to know how and why to work through a project. I need to know how set up a project and work through it understanding best practices. 
Do you know of such a resource?

Login to your affinity account, go to menu, scroll down to help & support, there you can find tutorial & resources.

The Affinity site has some tutorials. You didn't mention for certain that it is Desktop or iPad.

Do you mean you have no experience at all with computer photo editing? Knowing your level of previous experience, if any, would help us advise you.

When you go to the help page in the client (desktop or iPad), you find a link to Online-Tutorials. These are maintained by Serif directly - an advantage to YouTube tutorials, that often refer to older versions of the app.

You can access them directly as well - here for example the iPad tutorials for Affinity Photo:

Because there are many tutorials, I would only watch a few basic ones initially. Good practice would be to watch them on one device, and follow the steps on a second one running the App. Learn the basics of the user interface first, then add a few (!) practices you want to employ. Don’t try to learn „all“ - you won’t make it, you won’t need it and because of a lack of practice you will faster forget than progress.

James Ritson's official tutorial videos are fantastic.

As others have said, they're available under the Help menu.

And as Blende21 says, Olivio is very good too. But start with the official ones.

If you have no, or very little, experience of Photo Editing, a good start woudl be a series of 3 beginners tutorials on YouTube by @drippy cat.  First one is Affinity Photo Tutorial for Beginners - 101 - don't panic!. Simon is very good at expaining things in a straightforward way.
