Seperating a cog wheel into individual teeth

Recommended Posts

Hello, I am pretty new to Designer and I'm sure this is probably pretty easy as I'm googling it incorrectly so hopefully I can explain what I am trying to do. I have a Cog Wheel tool with just teeth and the tooth size set to 100% and the notch size set to 0% and 40 teeeth, which gives me a nice donut. What I want to do now is separate each tooth into its own object, but for the life of me I can not figure out how to do that. Converting the object into curves I figure is step one, but from there I am lost. I have tried breaking various curves, but can not figure out which ones to break to get my desired result. Breaking them all just results in a bunch of lines. I hope I explained that correctly, thanks to anybody able to offer help.

Hi and welcome.

The function you are looking for  is called „separate curves“. Unfortunately i could not find a help entry for that function.

Welcome to the forums @Ehrie

If you can explain what you are trying to do, the 'ultimate goal' if you will, then you might get some ideas of different workflows.

The Separate Curves functionality, as mentioned above, will not, by itself, allow you to separate each tooth into its own object but it is one possible step towards that aim.

The more information we have about what you are trying to do the better we can help you.

In my experiment (on iPad), it did the trick immediately from a cog wheel (no need to convert to curves or any other steps)

Same on a mac.

For instance, depending on your goal, Power Duplicate of a single item can be a useful option, too.

Also with Text on Curve you can achieve 100 segments and may specify width, length + distance of the segments as their text style before converting to curves:

Maybe the content was changed, and google kept an old cached entry.

What browser is your screenshot from? To me in Firefox a text search on a specific web page (affinity help frame) appears to work:

Nevertheless, I still wonder why the Affinity Help Search is limited to certain, selected keywords only but does not allow a full text search / search for expressions in quote marks.

Weird, that not at least every word of the app interface (incl. tooltips) got set as keyword by the Serif Help team (or automatically by software).

So, also still a search for "lock" shows no result and does neither find the lock in the Colour Panel, nor the Lock Children checkbox in the Context Toolbar or other lock options within panels like the aspect ratio lock in the Transform Panel or the Inset lock or column gutter lock in the Text Frame panel.

Even "lock children" does not show a result though it is a fundamental + not self-explaining function + additionally hard to detect at its position within the UI, most often hidden outside the right screen edge and requiring a click on the arrow to appear. 🤔

Thanks for all the help! This was exactly what I was looking for! I ended up finding another way to accomplish what I was looking to do with the donut tool, but went back and accomplished essentially the same thing with the workflow described above.

Exactly that. I am making a gauge for my Aida64 Sensor Panel and it needs to be 30 separate PNGs with a growing gauge wheel. I started messing with the cog wheel first before moving to the donut tool because it had the shape I wanted and I just discovered it first. Just newbie things really.
