Maximum brush sizes in Designer?

Recommended Posts

In Affinity Designer, brushes use raster textures. Is there an indicator anywhere that shows the maximum brush size? To know above what size will the texture get blurry at the given dpi. Often what looks good on screen prints terribly, so it would be good to know beforehand. I assume it could be calculated based on the texture image's px size if nothing else. But I don't know where to find it and how to do the math. I hope this makes sense. I'm having trouble translating my thoughts into English. 😅

I am not sure I understand what you are asking for, but for the Vector Brush Tool, if you double-click on a brush in the Brushes panel, in the window that opens you should see in the Stroke tab at the bottom on the far right the total number of pixels in the raster texture's width. So for example, for the 1st Acrylics brush, there is this:

Hi Annabella_K!

If you drag the Brush Width Slider to the max, you will get the size 1024 px. If you insert bigger values, it will jump back to 1024 px. So I suppose this is the maximum size.

But I'm not sure if there are mysterious ways to get bigger values. Never needed it.

So I suppose this is the maximum size.

This depends on the size of the image (PNG) used to create the brush. As you can see from my links, there is no size limit - for finer/sharper structures it is advisable to use a larger image.

Seems that it doesn't work in  my Designer-version. I tested an image of a size nearly 4000x4000 pixels as brush, and it still has only a maximum size of 1024 px. Even if I type the bigger value by hand. It is, by the way, the maximum limit for solid brushes too. I'm on Windows. Possibly it is different on Mac?

But it is different with Photo Brushes. They can be much larger.

Hi @iconoclast,

I've never noticed that Designer limits the size, so I tested what you said, but it's not the case for me. Only exception is when the Pencil tool is selected, then it doesn't let me set it bigger than 100px. But I think that's because the pencil tool can't be set to Texture Line Style by default, only afterwards. Then I can set the size to whatever I want. I'm on Windows 10.

Strange! I'm on Windows 10 too, but whatever I do, my Designer Brushes are limited to 1024 pixels maximum. The limit for brushes in Photo and Designers Pixel Persona is 4096 pixels in my case. But I can thicken the stroke of the pencil tool much more than 100 point (not pixels). You have to type the value by hand or set the cursor into the field and press the Up-Arrow-Key repeatedly.

Edit: And I can thicken the stroke of the brush afterwards with the Stroke Setting, seemingly unlimited. Is that what you mean?

I'm on a Mac & for me the stroke width of the AD Designer Persona (quasi)vector brushes are limited to 1024 px max. But I am not sure if that is what @Annabella_K is talking about.
