hey all!  I made a template with guides and stuff that is working pretty well for me.  I was wondering, if i make a new art board, how do i get the new art board to have the same template as the first art board?

the work around i am doing is just duplicating the original artboard that has the template.  that can be cumbersome because i then have to delete all the content of the duplicate artboard down to the base template.

I tried "placing" the template into the second artboard, but it makes it so the elements are unselectable.

am i missing a simple step somewhere?

thanks!

Templates are ‘whole-document’ templates so they probably aren’t what you are looking for.
You might like to try using Assets instead.
Create your ‘template artboard’, then create an Asset from it, then drag that Asset over to your document when you need a new one.

But Assets won't have the Guides that Kylegb is looking for, as far as I know.

@Kylegb: One solution might be be to duplicate the Artboard before adding content to it. You can Place the original template, but it will either be an Embedded document or a Linked document. You would need to ensure it was Embedded, because if it was Linked then if you make any changes to it they are made to the original file.

If you use Place, and have it Embedded, then you can use Edit Document from the Context Toolbar, or double-click on it to edit it in a new tab.

I would recommend just duplicating the Artboard first if you think you might need another one, or duplicating and deleting all the content, which is reasonably straightforward either from the Layers panel or by drawing a marquee around everything with the Move Tool and pressing Delete.

Interesting.  Thanks. (And apologies for doubting you, @GarryP)

Thank you for taking the time to help me!  I’ll look in to what asserts are and how to use them.  I haven’t wrapped my head around those yet.  I have been using symbols and those are fun.  I know those are different.

I’ve just been doing what Walt said and duplicating the art board :)

Just be sure you research "assets," not "asserts."
