A Duplication button needs to be added in the Layer Studio.

Recommended Posts

Before I begin, please refer to the forum post below. I'm currently redesigning the Layer Studio and I'll be talking about the Letter C Layer Studio mock up in this forum post.

A duplication button needs to be added to the layer studio. I know theres a duplication button in the edit menu but since Im working from my Layer Studio I need to be able to click a layer and hit a duplication button from inside my layer studio. I know you can duplicate from the edit menu and use a gesture but since my eyes are inside this Layer studio and Im working from this studio, I need a duplication button here. I need to be able to click a layer an delete it, lock it, turn off visibility, solo it, or duplicate it. Im wondering if other Clipboard actions should be added to the layer studio but Ill get back to you on that. For sure though a duplication button IS needed here. Below is an image of a duplication button in my Letter C layer studio mock up

why not have a 2-finger gesture to duplicate layers

If you are specifically in the layer studio and working from the layer studio and not your canvas, a 2 finger gesture wouldnt be good to duplicate. Itd be better if you could just tap 1 button to duplicate your layer.

Also, you cant have a 2 finger gesture to duplicate your layer because that 2 finger gesture is already being used for another action. The action of selecting multiple layers.

Ah, I've been side-swiping to do that.  And now that I'm testing that gesture it doesn't seem to be working on the canvas or the layers panel

Yeah, probably from procreate. Still, a side-swipe wouldnt be good because you have to do the gesture of side-swiping and then tap duplicate. Its 2 steps. 1 step would be better where you would just tap a duplication button.

Here a video explaining the 2 finger gesture in the layers studio. Its at the 5:02 mark.

Ah, I see what you mean. 2-fingers ON the the first to last layers you select is how it's done.

I'm only just about to get Procreate, actually. He does show the sideswipe to multi-select right before your example btw.

But I mean, it's a different condition. I was originally thinking 2-fingers on the canvas and moving the selected layers/s in the layers panel up or down to create the duplicate/s (with one finger)

You're right.  I was only thinking in context of duplicating via the layers panel and not objects on the canvas.

At this point what I was just describing seems more convoluted than duplicating via dragging objects with a 2-finger gesture or an easier to access function on screen ie contextual menu on the canvas.

Also I'm still tired and haven't had breakfast yet so brain still wonkier more than usual 😛

I saw that. Its a 1 finger gesture side swipe to select.

Theres 2 workflows. Working on the canvas and working inside the layer studio. What youre trying to do is work in both workflows at the same time. Its not good, Its not good because you should really focus on 1 workflow. You have your mind focused on the canvas but its also focused on the layer studio. So your mind is at these 2 places at once. Just focus on 1 workflow. Your attention is either on the canvas or the layer studio.

If you 2 finger gesture an object and move it, it will duplicate it and in your layer studio it will show that you now have 2 objects.

If you select your object in the layer studio and hit the duplicate button it will duplicate your object and show 2 objects in your layers.

So this 3rd way of working is just not it because theres a button already in the layer studio for you to duplicate your object and you are working as if the layer studio IS the canvas. The layer studio is not your canvas.

I hope I make sense. Also, it wouldnt work because in the layer studio we use our finger or apple pencil to scroll! Theres scrolling. Scrolling would make your version hard to duplicate objects.

Tapping with two fingers in the Layers Studio doesn’t work for me if I have my fingers too close together.

I didn't realize they were considered as 2 separate workflows.

Well, I see them as 2 workflows. The workflow of being on the canvas and working on the canvas by moving and building your objects and doing duplication there AND THEN the 2nd workflow of being inside the layer studio to do other work there as well as duplicating objects there.

But yeah I agree it's too much, plus I brainfarted about duplicating via the canvas.

I get what you mean. Youre making it hard for yourself. Its just 2 finger move to duplicate on the canvas, hit the duplication button in your layer studio, OR go to the edit menu to duplicate there.

Yes. I know you were trying to duplicate the layers in the layers studio. Not the objects on the canvas but it still wouldnt work. Even then if you duplicate an object using the 2 finger gesture on the canvas, the layer in the layer studio is going to be duplicated as well.

Yes. It sounded very convoluted because you were combing 2 workflows to duplicate when you already have 3 ways of duplicate. You wanted a 4th way.

Yes. Im working on the context toolbar for the move tool. Ill show you an image later of what I designed and a duplication button is on that toolbar. 🙂 I made a post about it here.
