If you give your symbols names, then you can use Select > Select Same > Name. Workflow: Create object. In Layers panel, give it a name. From Symbols panel, Create the symbol. At that point the Symbol has a name, and you can select any copy and use Select > Select Same > Name to select all of them. Unfortunately I had a bug with select same selecting locked objects (which I did report), so will refrain from using it for now in the document I'm working on... I am not certain that is a bug, it may be by design. Obviously Select needs more options, many more. Hopefully it will improve with time.
