It is pretty obviously meant as an insult. What other phrase starts with "sons of"? The rest you should be able to figure out.

“Sons [of] Adobe” suggests that Serif might be following Adobe’s lead, which is clearly not the case. It’s very evident that Serif isn’t going down the subscription route.

As I understand it, @Marko Grafiko does not understand that in the software industry there is a difference between an app update & an app upgrade

hmmm... how about an update that breaks things?

I was, of course, being facetious with my original comment.

What I'd really like to know is if they're still in business or just barely hanging on, because they still haven't fixed some very simple and basic issues, and the frequency of their updates seems to be waning.

A problem with a 2.0 paid upgrade will be what Affinity choses to see as 'worthy' and what not for such an apparently major overhaul. For instance, will we see a solution to the brush options issue, as first posted back in 2017...

...an issue that still, even now, fatally hobbles AD/AP. What makes the 2.0 shopping list I feel will be crucial toward those who choose to drop the dime and those who will decide to forever close the Affinity door.

I will gladly pay for the 2.0 major upgrade. I have yearly subscriptions for Construct 3, Office 365, Cyberlink and I can tell you, they cost at least double as what Serif is asking for the Affinity suite.

I do not see what the 2.0 upgrade price has to do with fraud? I am wondering how much Marko Grafiko is doing for free. We paid once for the 1. version of Designer, Photo and Publisher. Serif updated regularly and we worked all those years for the price we paid long ago (depending on when you bought). Is it then too much to ask for an update fee for 2.0.

I also checked out the OxygenBuilder.com you suggested. 129 USD for the basic version and in promotion 149 USD for the ultimate version. Still Serif is much cheaper because when I remembered correctly, I paid 54 euro when they were first released. Normally the OxygenBuilder.com Ultimate cost 349 USD, which you need when you are a serious website developer. So when buying the ultimate version, it will take 6 Affinity paid updates to come on that price.

Marko Grafiko is very wrong here in my opinion. Speaking for myself, I am willing to pay for every update because it still will be cheaper than for a subscription. When for any reason you cannot work for a month, still your subscription keeps running. In the Serif model, you pay for what you are really using.

The 2.0 upgrade will not come any time soon I think. I cannot find any mention about a coming 2.0 upgrade.

The Affinity Suite is an excellent tool and you can make good money with it. So in return, let us support the Serif company to motivate them to innovate and improve on their applications.

Chris

I really don't understand why some people get so upset about having to pay for software! It's your choice!

There are plenty of free apps, for just about everything, if that's what you want.

On the other hand, if you want the "market leader" brand, or some very specialised apps, you may have to pay through the nose for them.

Then there are the others, like the Serif/Affinity apps, which do an excellent job and are reasonably priced.

Different companies and organisations have different criteria for how they charge (or make money in other ways) to develop and distribute their apps. That's up to them!

Personally I use a number of free apps and I have a few which I paid for with a "one off" fee. The only apps which I have bought, and expect to have to buy again if I want to get new versions, are the three Affinity apps. I am perfectly happy with that. Several of the other apps I use are now quite old, but they still work and I'm happy to keep on using them. When the next versions of the Affinity apps are released, I will decide if I think it's worth paying for them, if not, I'll just keep using the current versions. It's my choice, just like everyone else can choose what they want to do.

(And, please, don't blame anyone else if you don't bother to read the marketing information and EULA properly, or if you don't make the most of free trials and return policies!)

This aspect seems to be a general question for all 3 Affinity apps on each platform:
Will there be a final update for v.1.x to get logged & tagged bugs fixed – before v.2 and thus independent of an upgrade?

Hi guys,

I worked with Adobes suite of graphic software for almost 25 years until i found a nearly comparable professional alternative - Affinity. In this period of time i paid thousands of euros for Adobe software upgrades. For professional users this is the common deal: if you want to have excellent tools - pay the developers for their work. Give the software a chance to evolve.

As PaulIEC mentioned, Affinity Designer, Publisher and Photo "do an excellent job and are reasonably priced". Of course, there are a lot of "little buggers" that anoy me when working with these tools for a whole day. But since 10.x i encountered no major bugs in Designer or Publisherso far.

Compared to the three Adobe flagships Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign the Affinity Tools do a great job! And some features are far better then the Adobe stuff. The Studio functionality in Publisher is an excellent idea and saves a lot of time compared to InDesign! During the last three years I almost replaced my whole Adobe workflow with the new Affinity tools! Yes it's possible - but if you regularily have to exchange data with printers or other creatives who (stil) use Adobe, things become difficult 😕 But at least it's possible to open Photoshop, Illustrator, PDF or some InDesign files with Affinity!

Please think about this: I payed about 54 EUR for each of the three software tools in 2017 (Publisher 2019) - all perpetual licenes. Since then, we got a bunch of free updates and fixes AND additional features. Compare this to Adobe Creative Cloud. There you have to pay about 60 EUR EVERY MONTH for a big bunch of software that you possibly never use (video, 3d, audio, XD, ...). And since the introduction of the Creative Cloud the Software evolves very slow. It seems Adobe is not longer interested in creating "the best graphic software ever". They only want to make money. And if you can not longer pay the Adobe fee, their software will STOP working after 6 month! That's the bad thing about subscriptions. You can't even open your old files!

For freelancers like me the Affinity Suite is a good set of tools which can do nearly every graphics jobs. Of course there are a lot of missing professional features (e.g. color separation preview, better spline handling, better interactivity for PDF, and, and, and, ...).

But i hope, in the next version there will be a pack of new additions. And i will of course pay for these upgrades! Because i always want and need better tools for my daily work.

cheers :-)

Even if there are no major new features in the new upgrade (version 2), it will be a new set that has been updated and developed for free for several years. So it's definitely worth buying it.

I do not talk about small bugs that have workarounds, (...)

If you think I’m lying,

No, I don't think you are lying!

My post was rather meant as an encouragement for Serif to consider what bugs would deserve a bug fix in a separate update before v2 gets offered as a paid upgrade.

I think there are several bugs which may appear unacceptable. For instance concerning colours, in particular spot colours, there are currently layouts which can't create a valid production PDF. Also the various bugs on M1 macs, respectively with hardware acceleration on mac & win platform may appear like a not acceptable bug since it limits the computers capabilities. Or the failing results for some boolean geometry operations. – Finally it seems to matter how "workaround" respectively "by design" get defined.

Also, there still is the option to publish updates with bug fixes for v1 even after v2 has been released. (for example as it happens regularly with macOS, where security updates are also developed and delivered for older versions).

Well higher versioning scheme major.minor[.build[.revision]] numbers (like: 1.10.5.1342) here indicate more internal versioning beta build revision numbers, e.g. 1.10.5.1342, but no release version updates. Since the later as versioned by Affinity will look instead like major.minor.patch --> 1.10.5 then.

In Serif's terms, we have currently for the released version of Affinity Photo on Windows: 1.10.5.1342.

image.png.7c80886e1b662cf7febe0d54eef4a4ad.png

And I would say it is version.release.minor.build:

version = 1
release = 10
minor = 5
build = 1342

If we get another 1.10 release, it will probably be 1.10.6.something where the something will be > 1342. Alternatively, we might get a 1.11.0.something (release 11, rather than release 10).

Or we might get a version change (and a new purchase): 2.0.0.something, for example.

We really don't know.

Who cares about Windows ... 😉  Further why should a released version indicate that they may have needed 1342 internal builds in order to finally release that 1.10.5 version? Looks to me more that somebody was too lazy to version it for the Win version another time the right way before releasing, or due to time pressure!

You can also see the build number (though using different terminology) on the iPad versions.

I've often wondered why Serif didn't bother to include the build number on the Mac retail versions. Though it may simply be that the Affinity Store numbering on Mac matches the Mac App Store numbering. And they decided to go with consistency there.

Still, though, in 1.10.5, "10" is the major number, and "5" is the "minor" number, not the "patch" number. The Affinity file formats are downward compatible (usually) only within a given major number. Thus, 1.9 could read 1.8 files, but 1.8 could not read files created by 1.9.

Versioning schemes are not cast in stone, you can adapt those to your individual needs! - Further you call it version.release.minor, I called it explicitely instead major.minor.patch, the reason I call that more patch than anything else can be seen here! - There have been just applied fixes (aka patches for some wrong behavior) and a slightly more actual libraw version was included nothing else. So these have been at best all bugfixes since 1.10.0!
