Hi,

I have an issue here. I have tried a few "number" of things but I do not seem to get through to what I need to do. I have set up my document -a small pamphlet- with about 24 pages. I divided it in three parts. I have made a number of master pages to  set up text boxes for titles for the three parts. I need page numbers at the top for the three parts eg: 1-1, 1-2, 1-3 etc then 2-1. 2-2, etc then 3-3 and so on. The way I set up these top numbers is by typing 1- or 2- or 3- and then entering the page number through fields. This works great. (although it may not be "right"...)

But I also want continual page numbers at the bottom of the pages. I have made a separate master pages for these. This is when the issue happens. Whenever the bottom page number changes to greater 1-24 the top number keeps on counting the same way. I wish though that the top number would just stop counting when the first part is done and then restart at 1 for the second part (or segment) and so on.

I also observed that one method follows the other; I mean when I use the section panel to restart numbering to another section the bottom number follows that one too. So instead of having the number 24 at the end of the document I have 6 or 8 depending how long the last segment was.

Any way around this?
Sincerely asking, 😕

Denis

Hi, @daveedband welcome to the forums.

You can control the sections with the section manager.
However, there is also a small catch here. There is no possibility to set the page number in the section and an absolute, consecutive page number.

Each page has only one page number. It signs like you want it to have to numbers, one running sequentially from 1 to n, and one that resets to 1 for each section. That's not supported.

There are other ways you could do it. For example, a text frame on each page just for the sequential number, with all those linked together. You make it small enough it can only hold one number, and paste a set of numbers into the first frame. They will flow through so that only one shows on each page. You'd probably put that frame on a Master Page.
