I have just started a new A3 portrait orientation document, with a 3 mm bleed on each edge.

I have

View

Show Bleed

ticked.

That shoes the area.

However, I seem to remember that there is a way to have a visual indication of which area is document and which area is bleed, in the form of a rectangle, possibly red.

However, I don't remember how to do that.

i have tried looking in the help facility but I could not find it.

Can someone remind me please?

Well, I found that grey filled rectangle on the panel, which I had thought was "greyed out" but in fact is just a colour and it was grey by default.

So I changed it to red (255, 0, 0) and the filled rectangle was red and I clicked OK.

But when I looked at the document it was not showing.

But when I went back to document setup, the filled rectangle was grey again.

So I have not been able to get the red colour "locked in".

A screenshot of that Document Setup dialog, and of your View menu, and another of the full application window with the document in it would be helpful, William.

Here is the dialogue panel. But if I click OK, then open it again, the red has not locked in, I get the default grey again. The Save for the document was still greyed out.

For completeness, here is the document on some of the background.

To put this in context, what I am trying to do is to produce an A3 poster version of the greetings card in the following thread, which is interesting because I need to work out how to do it, given the different aspect ratios, and that the explanation is inside the greetings card and I am wondering if, and if so, how, to incorporate the explanation, prominently yet unobtrusively, into the poster.

Sorry, but "completeness" requires showing the complete application window as I requested.

The Red is for the line around the grey. Like the blue for the margins.

I have never mastered color management, period, so I cannot help with that.

This is strange because I remember a document with the bleed area line in red upon the light grey background and I haven't updated the software.

Why does clicking OK not lock the red coour in the Bleed section of the Document setup?

Thank you for the video.

What I have been doing is different from what ypu did in two ways. I changed colour in the light environment, and I selected the rd colour by entering digits in the RGB sliders colour selector. That should not make any diffeence, but I will try it anyway, just in case it does.

I have got it to work. I used the colour wheel.

But I think it is because I noticed something that you did in the video that I had not been doing.

You clicked in a box that had a value for the bleed width in it.

So it seemed that the colour had not been locked in because I had not done that.

Yet maybe not!

Because, for completeness, I then tried changing the colour by entering numbers in the colour sliders facility boxes and it would not work.

But, I have got the bleed guidelines displayed, so back to trying to produce the A3 poster version of the greetings card.

Thank you for your help.

I don’t think the UI Style should matter.

I think that’s a bug.
I’ve just tried to enter the RGB numbers and the colour doesn’t ‘keep’ for me either – see attached video.

I think you're right!

It seems to work if you use the sliders, but not if you enter the numbers manually.

Well, I don't know how I entered it when I used it on a previous occasion with another document, but I don't usually use the colour wheel for colours of shapes and brushes, I usually use the RGB sliders and I often use the slider panel and enter numbers in the boxes, though not congruently always.

Anyway I have now got rgb = (255,0,0) bleed lines displayed.

Thank you everybody for your help in solving this issue.

I seemed to have a problem getting the bleed area coloured black where I wanted it black, but I think I got it to work.

Alas, I should have written notes decribing how I did it at the time, and now I am not sure quite what I did.

I've logged this issue with our developers as I also found another small issue with the same dialogue but on macOS.

Just in case (because possibly technically related), there are other situations where fields aside sliders don't work properly.

For instance when setting a text style font colour in the Text Style Editor window: here the field can get selected (highlighted) but ignores any pressed key, so there is no way for numerical colour definition here, too. (I don't know whether this was reported before)

Another one was reported before but not commented by Serif yet (and thus not logged / tagged?). – It concerns values in stroke fields irritating with their decimals:
