If you put some shapes into a group or under a layer you can Alt-click the thumbnailof this group or layer in the layer palette an only the content of this group or layer is shown. You can than select an manipulate any object or shape. To exit this "solo-mode" click anywhere other than on an object or shape. If you have to use the layers panel to do that then it hasn't been implemented properly. AFAIK the feature you mention has existed since v1. You should be able to simply double click on a group and enter the group in isolation mode. No extra shortcuts and no wasting time on another panel. Ctrl + H to hide others. Shift + Ctrl + Alt + H to show all. Similar shortcuts on Mac no doubt. I nevertheless think there should be a more advanced layer/ group/ object isolation mode. The reason being is that if you are tracing over stuff, usually the objects will be added to the layer of the object you are tracing over. This results in a clusterf*** of having to move objects around in the layers studio all the time. It becomes increasingly messy to manage, especially when you have one trace over layer and need to compare this layer to multiple other layers/ objects below or on top of the layer that is to be traced over. Not having more control over which content you keep manipulating and where you end up creating your objects just wastes so much time for me. This also still applies to V2.
