Forgive me, I am betting that this has been answered already — it seems basic, but I am not able to find any information either searching the forum or with Google.

I am photojournalist represented by an agency/wire service and am trying (hard) to figure out a way to leave my laptop behind on assignments and use an iPad Pro, it's so much easier to carry. The problem that I am having is with metadata. I am required to attach a raft of IPTC fields to every image I send up the wire and I've found an FTP app to get them there off the iPad; and I've found Affinity Photo which allows for filling the bare minimum of my required metadata fields on an image-by-image basis. It might work!

But I am afraid that I will have to enter info into all of the IPTC fields over and over which is not workable for assignment work when I'm returning as many as 50 pictures in a hurry or even getting my freelance stuff up on the wire. Is there any way to create a metadata preset that can populate IPTC fields that have the same info picture to picture? Document templates may be it but I can not figure out how to make/use them. There does not appear to be a way to create metadata presets in the metadata interface as in Photo Mechanic/ Lightroom; am I just missing it?! (I am a techno-rube so that's a real possibility.)

Affinity Photo seems like it could be a great program for me even as I won't use much more than the RAW file and basic darkroom work aspects of it, (Liquify?! I don't even want to know.) but only if I can apply a basic agency-specific metadata preset to my pictures. The ability for batch "processing" a bunch of images with this info (and batch exporting, but I am betting I just haven't found that yet) will determine if I tossed the app cost out the window or not.

I am not the only photojournalist who wants to leave the laptop at home and whose head spins looking at ShutterSnitch. Affinity, at least for me, is intuitive enough after using the usual photo processing players. And I can import from an SD card reader easily enough. An IPTC info template and metadata batch work will make me a convert with a less sore back. Thanks in advance for any help anyone can give to help me with this!!

Dear all,

I have made some time similar comments about IPTC and other metadata.

Data entry requires to jump from tab to tabs.

Multiple templates would help to manage different projects, from a data entry point of view.
With templates, only required fields would be show, with an door to use optional fields
Option to fill some fields with variables and formulas, e.g. filling the IPTC Text and Description with say "Photo 123", as the combination of the Text "Photo " and "123" being the EXIF file name. IPTC Author to be fill automatically with EXIF data.

I am presently using the DAM tool called Daminion to do this job. Daminion for single user is about 100 USD/EUR/UKP, so in the same price category as Affinity products.
Serif could find useful to look at this tool from a ease of use and fonctinality viewpoint.

Serif may want to discuss a deal with the Daminion guys (or other equivalent tools in the same price category). Such integration could work for virtually all photo, video and PDF file formats. So useful for any Affinity Photo, Designer and Publish user.

You can record a macro (desktop) to set the metadata in certain fields

Then use File > New Batch Job using that macro to write the metadata to other files

Pretty sure you can replay all macros on an iPad but not 100% certain as I don't use one

J. Matt,

You are definitely not the only photojournalist who needs this. I've been filing photos with mobile devices since 2003 and have used several platform and software combinations. I am currently using FSN Pro, that's an upgrade from Filterstorm Nue, because it supports IPTC templates. As you know, this is a must for fast filing. I use this app on iPad too, but it is best on iPhone. However, I am sure the app will be abandoned at some point and I watch whether Affinity Photo will support this with keen interest. Also, if I have to choose between iPad and iPhone, I choose iPhone hands down. The whole point is to not have to go sit down somewhere to file. If I have to do that, I might as well use a laptop.
