gkao
Need some help from community gurus. I'm sure this is a simple question for many of you, but not being a designer, I can't seem to figure it out. Take a look at this logo. I used the smoke brush to achieve the grunge effect. (logo_texture.afdesign) We're printing these onto plastic and metal surfaces. However, the printer has come back and said that the texture cannot be achieved with laser etching or silkscreen printing due to the smoke effect. They said a one-tone or two-tone flat color would work. My question: Since the effect I'm trying to achieve is black with fading transparency to achieve the smokey/gradient grunge look, how do I edit this logo to get that to work so it prints either using one-tone silkscreen, or laser etching? logo_texture.afdesign
anon1
I´ve added a curves adjustment (logo_texture1) - in the alpha (alpha basically means transparency) section I´ve adjusted it in a way that has the following effect: everything between 50-100% transparent >> gets 100% transparent everything between 0-50%% transparent >> gets 100% opaque so you and up with only black and transparent areas, maybe that´s what he means with "one-tone flat color"? -------------- logo_texture2 and I´ve uses Affinity Photo to posterize the shading into two grey levels which may suit the printer guys description of "two tone" then I used the "erase white paper filter" to make the white parts transparent again (I had to add a white background first because the posterize filter can´t deal with transparency) hope this helps ;) Leigh
gkao
Thanks very much, MBd. logo_texture1 is what I was going for. Just so I understand how this was done (designating the % transparency to get 100% transparency and 100% opaque), can you help me with the specific steps? This was what I was able to do: 1) Select layer/layer group 2) Layer -> New Adjustment -> Curves 3) Select Alpha in drop down But then how do I designate the % transparency levels? Thanks. anon1
anon1
You can look at the curve in my file. It's a little hard to see cause the alpha curve has light grey, the other (R,G,B) curves are white. I've dragged the bottom left node to the bottom centre and the top right node to the top centre. To understand curves in general would be easier for you with some videos on YouTube instead of me explaining it in words .... Hope this helps :)
anon1
One note for the developers: When I exported the logo_texture2 file using PNG8, the grey disappeared. It was translated to black or transparent (I haven't looked at it any further). I used PNG24 and then used tinyPNG whitch saved 46% loose less. I didn't think that PNG8 would eliminate the grey cause there clearly are not more than 8 colors in the image ... Maybe this is by design, but maybe you can improve this somehow? gkao
I see what you did now. I hadn't noticed the "step" curve since it was hidden behind the lines. Thanks for your help!
