PLEASE LET US CHOOSE DEFAULT UNIT

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone :)

I really don't understand why it is not possible to choose default unit at the start.

It's amazing.

Hundreds of people ask you to enable this feature and you don't hear them.

I work in a print shop, I use your suite with success, but everyday  I need to open hundred of images and i have to change the unit every single time from pixel to cm.

It's incredibly non-sense, this thing.

And you know.

Why you don't let us a simple upgrade to have it?

It's really inconceivable.

They are talking about Opening files ("I need to open hundred of images"), not creating them.

Ah, I see. Sorry to miss that detail.

So, if I want to open an image, which is made of pixels and doesn't have an inherent other dimension, and have it convert to a different unit, wouldn't I also need to tell it the DPI/PPI I wanted it to use as well?

Many (most?) image files will have metadata that provides a DPI and/or a size. In that case, it is only necessary to change the units.

In Photo, that takes only 2 clicks when you Open an image, but some production users seem to consider that too much delay. (In Designer or Publisher it might take 3 clicks if you don't normally have the Rulers displayed.)

Just out of curiosity - why do you have to do it?

Imagine you are in a print shop, the customer comes and asks you to print a 50x70 cm photo paper.

You need to open the file, change the unit, scale it, and print.

Imagine you have to do it 100 times a day with no reason.

Imagine you have a folder with 100 pictures of different sizes, and you need to print them all 40x60 cm.

And each time you need to open the file, change the unit, scale it, and print.

Have you ever heard on someone asking you "Hi, i'd  like to print this picture on glossy photo paper, 2845x4745 pixel size?"

If yes, tell me on which planet :)

It's a complete non-sense.

And you know because hundreds of people ask you to give us the possibility to set default unit (you can easily watch in this forum)

and you do nothing.

Complete non-sense.

And, overall, with no reason at all.

Unfortunately, you did not answer the question "why do you have to change the document units?".  You just keep writing that you have to change units 100 times a day, but you don't write "why".

Changing the units is not needed to change the scale, nor is it necessary for print.  So do you make any special adjustments to photos, cropping, collages, montages where centimeters are necessary?

You need to make a new file from your 50 x 70 cm preset, place the file, scale it and print it.

You could even have a series Template files with the various paper sizes your shop uses. All set to use the proper (best for your equipment) colour format and with the proper colour profile at the proper DPI/PPI setting. Set the template to convert the colour space and you are good to go.

Mac Pro (Late 2013) Mac OS 12.7.4
Affinity Designer 2.4.1 | Affinity Photo 2.4.1 | Affinity Publisher 2.4.1 | Beta versions as they appear.

I have never mastered color management, period, so I cannot help with that.

Too bad you weren't able to answer the question "why" you have to change the units of the document. Perhaps Serif would understand the importance and necessity of this step, and perhaps adjust the priorities in the development process.

I will switch again to Adobe.

I congratulate you on being able to afford to switch to Adobe, just to save having to change the units. 😁

(Personally I agree that being able to set a default unit would be handy, but, for me, there are a few more important considerations when I choose which apps to use!)

  • Is there some reason you can't just do the scaling at print time by setting the "Fit Type" to "Fit to Printable"?
  • Have you tried using GraphicConverter (if you are on the Mac) instead for things like this?

While Affinity Photo is not likely the best choice for bulk printing of lots of photos like this...

File -> New Batch Job

Add Files

Save into (destination folder)

Save as (format) - enter "40cm" and "60cm" for size

OK

From there, if you are on a Mac and used a compatible file format, you can navigate to the destination folder in the Finder, select all, right click -> Open With -> Preview, and File -> Print.

I would imagine there is some similar capability you could leverage on the other platform.

Alternatively, if you happen to have Publisher as well...

Create a new document with the correct page size and the same number of pages as you have images

Add the required picture frame to the document's master page and in its properties (on the context toolbar) choose the appropriate scaling option (one on each side if using facing pages)

File -> Place, navigate to and select the images, then place them in the frames on the pages

File -> Print

No need to scale the images - the frames will take care of it
