When I open a new document, I can select what size etc... I normally select an A4 page.

But, what effect does the DPI setting have?

Its defaulted to 300DPI, but what effect does that have on things?

The one thing I've noticed is that physical size on the screen is very large. Compared to a page set to 96DPI.

I could say what I think it is, but, I would rather hear the answer from the Experts.

As you can see, your document type is Print (first option).

It can be important when you're working with raster (bitmap) graphic, because 300 dpi is print standard.

But vectors are resolution independent.

In fact, even with raster graphic dpi only is a myth because it tells you how dense are pixels in one inch. But it doesn't tell you how big your picture will be. Size only (ie. 3 x 4 in) doesn't tell you that too. So, much safer is using resolution with size (ie. 300 dpi, 4x5 in) or pixels (ie. 3000 x 2000 px).
