AI file that doesn't load all the elements

Recommended Posts

Hi there! I'd love to purchase a license for Affinity Design, it's obviously much more affordable than Illustrator, and I liked the interface during my trial (which has now expired :( ). However, I have an AI file that Affinity wasn't able to load all the elements from. I'd like to submit this file privately, so that you guys can take a look at it, and hopefully, Affinity can then be "fixed" so that it's able to load this file. Is there a way for me to do that (submit an AI file privately for inspection)?

To have an idea of what the file involves, have a look at this PNG:

As you can see, it has a lot of complex shapes in it; my problem is that most of the icons weren't loading, and a fair bit of the text, as well (it's a custom font installed on my computer). Most (all?) of the icons are originally SVG elements. The file works perfectly fine in Illustrator, though; that's where I built it originally.

Thanks!

richardmtl,

After looking at the link in your post, I would make two suggestions. Firstly, how did you get your .ai file into Affinity Designer? Did you open it directly or did you save your .ai file as a .pdf file? I would recommend trying it as a .pdf file instead of .ai, that sometimes clears some things up. Secondly, convert the type that is giving you problems into outlines in Illustrator before you save it as a .pdf. Designer should be able to use the font but if for some reason it isn't working, then making things into outlines is a quick fix. If some of the elements that you are using are symbols in Illustrator, try breaking the link to them before you save them as a .pdf (of course you would want to keep a copy of your original file with the fonts as fonts and the symbols as symbols in case you need to go back). It might help. Most things done in Illustrator convert over to Designer pretty smoothly but there are some exceptions.

Best of luck,

Hokusai

Hi Hokusai!

Unfortunately, my trial has expired so I can't try again, and the last time I tried it was about a month ago, so I don't remember all the details. However, I'm pretty sure I tried the .ai file directly. As for the type suggestion, that's a good idea! I wish I could try another trial, to see if I can import it as a PDF as you suggest (I don't want to start over from scratch). As for the elements being "symbols" in Illustrator, I'm not sure if they were (I'm a novice when it comes to Illustrator), so I'm not sure what a "symbol" would actually be. Basically, I have:

- SVG elements (each icon on the map is from an SVG, or at least the vast majority are)

- Basic lines (paths? the coloured lines for each metro line)

Thanks for your reply!

@Hokusai: good news! I took advantage of the 20% off and purchased the full version of Designer, and tried opening my .ai file again; everything loaded! The only thing that's missing, as far as I can tell, is that I had organized things in layers and sub-layers; the sub-layers are missing, so everything is in the top-level layers. Oh well, it's not the end of the world. I'm still pleased! :)
