I’m new to the forum, so I need to add a description to my topic question. When I export an SVG file into affinity designer, I get a checkered background instead of the default white background. This creates a problem for me because all I can color are my lines and I can’t color fill any of my shapes. Is there a way to fix this? I restarted my iPad, and I even deleted the app and re-installed it. The problem is still not resolved. Thanks to anybody who can help me with this problem!

You can choose any time if the background is shown in white or transparent.

But the background is only for rendering in Photo. If you export to SVG, no background will be included (intentionally).

You may add a rectangular shape in the size of the canvas any time as bottom layer if you need a white background (or any other color).

You may benefit from watching the official beginner tutorials.

Hi, thanks for getting back to me.

I took a look at the tutorials but couldn’t find anything that addressed my question. However, I was able to create a white background for my piece.

However, what I really want to know is how to color fill the spaces in my vector image. I can use the pencil and pen, but they’re not very clean. Is there a way to select any given space that I want to fill in with color?  Right now only the lines filled with color.

Attached is a simple drawing with one area where I used the pen. As you can see, it’s not very good. Filling in color is so much cleaner:)

Thanks!

Affinity differs from other Apps how allow to "paint in" the fill.

It depends on how need the document in vector format, or can with bitmap export.

For bitmap export, you can

  1. duplicate the "Layer" layer
  2. rasterise it
  3. switch to pixel persona
  4. use flood selection tool to select one area
  5. use fill tool to fill selected area with color
  6. repeat for other areas.

If you need to stay vector:

  1. create a new closed curve which roughly covers an area
  2. Put it below the exiting layers, so that the edges get covered by the black lines
  3. set fill color to chosen color
  4. repeat for all areas

Do you know the difference between

  • open curve, stroke color, stroke width,
  • closed curve, fill color?
